Last time we had a Democrat try to straighten out an economic mess, it took 10 years and a war to fix it. The more the government messes with the system, the harder it is to recover. Taking government funding away is like trying to cure a heroin addict.

 

Not many people realize it, or choose to forget, but FDR's economic policies did nothing to bring the economy out of the recession...only World War II did that.

FDR, more than anything established confidence in the American people during that time and led the country.

Obama is likeable but has a lot of baggage for a young politician.

Hearsay, the real key would probably be the mid term elections in 2010 wouldn't they? Clinton won in '92 but because of the Health Care/Socialized Medicine push the GOP took advantage and ran a great campaign that captured the House and Senate. That kept Clinton in check the remaining 6 years.

 

Because of that, I don't see the watershed being 2012 but 2010 and whether or not the public votes in a check on the Obama government by the GOP taking back at least the Senate and maybe the House as well.

Whomever is President, I would expect things to not go well year one, and perhaps year two. If Obama is President, I won't go as far to say that the Republicans will gain a majority in either the House or Senate(much could depend on the expected gains the Dems make this year), but they will probably close the gap if things don't go as well. If the Republican Revolution doesn't happen in 94, many of the "good" times under Clintion would have happened, I believe, under a Republican President- and it wouldn't have been Bob Dole.

I think that is a bit excessive as I don't knw if anyone will beat out Grant or Carter at the bottom. Athough I admit that President Bush has taken more strides towards it than anyone else.
