Barack Obama vs. Sarah Palin

Featured Replies

What makes Barack Obama more credible and qualified than Sarah Palin?

Obama - Community organizer, state senator, and now senator

Palin - Mayor and now governor of Alaska

The biggest difference, it seems to me, is that Sarah Palin was actually concentrating and working on her job. Obama has pretty much been working on his run for president ever since he got to Washington. What exactly has he ever done that is noteworthy?

As best I can tell, neither of them are oozing the type of experience you'd want in a president. The difference is that only one of them is actually running for that office.

In addition, people claim they want someone who is bipartisan and will work with both sides to get things done. John McCain has a far stronger track record of doing that than Obama.

If you're among those who can't vote for McCain because his VP is "unqualified", can you please tell me what makes the democratic presidential candidate more qualified than the republican VP? What has Obama done as a senator that is more impressive than Palin's work as governor?

If you're among those who want someone who will work with both parties, can you please tell me why I should ignore the candidates proven track records and think Obama would be more balanced in that regard?

Great questions... :thumb:

Good luck attracting logical answers.

Palin problem now isn't her lack of experience, it's the fact that I don't think she is very smart. I am now in the corner of her being a horrible choice for VP. Of the 4 people on these two tickets I am not sure I can support a single one of them. The only thing I can hope for any more is that McCain wins so we can have 4 years of Tina Fey doing Palin.

Obama's Advantages

Knowledge of the issues

Grasp of the situation of the world right now, and our place in it

Charisma

Not an idealogue

I've hardly read a thread on the P & R Forum for a while because of that.

I was hoping I'd be able to sift through and get a few reasonable responses in the midst of the "are not, am too" posts...

What has Obama done as a senator that's more impressive than Palin's accomplishments as governor of Alaska?

How can an Obama supporter say Palin's "inexperience" is a huge concern and not feel the same way about his own candidate?

I said this a few weeks ago and I stand by it...

In this election, I do not think any one of the tickets holds much of an advantage when you break it down. Bottom line - McCain and Biden have been around for a while. Obama and Palin have not. I do not try to get in to comparing and contrasting the merits of their work.

I have never said her experience is an issue, to me it is her grasp of the issues and knowlege of the world.

Even I would have had a better answer prepared for my foreign policy experience that I live close to Russia and planes fly over and alaska trades with canada.

Lets see . . . I adopted a young lady from Guatemala and had to deal with their government bureaucracy and the international treaty signed at the Hague - the Hague Treaty. I order soccer stuff for my son from Europe . . . I took a class in college called the History of the Third Reich and one called the Vietnam war from the Vietnamese Perspective. I led a class to Washington D.C. and we participated in a Mock United Nations.

I am also bothered her by her hardcore conservative ideology, which is exactly why she is on the ticket - to fire up the base . . . she did that, now the independents are leaving.

How should we decide who to vote for? Heads or tails? :D

I didn't accuse you of saying experience was an issue. I just posed a couple of questions.

your grasp of Obama is a little off if you think he isn't an idealogue

Are you in favor of higher taxes? Do you want to continue to have the right to own a firearm and purchase the ammunition for it? Just a couple of questions that may give you your answer. There are many more but I will save those when election time gets a little closer.

Tell me a position that he has taken, that makes him an idealogue. From the complaints on here about him changing his positions, I would say he is more of a pragamatist, and FWIW I would much rather have a pragmatist who might shift his positions, than one who says "this is the only way it is going to be, you are either for us or against us". Take his stance on offshore drilling for example. Obama is against it, but he says that he would be willing to allow it if it lead to a more comprehensive energy bill. He could compromise on that to get something done. EXCELLENT.

How do you determine when a candidate's "change" is sincere and when he's just saying what is needed at that moment based on his audience or public sentiment?

It seems to me that far too much weight is placed on what the candidates say and how they say it in 2008 and not nearly enough is placed on what the candidates have actually DONE prior to the election year.

Everyone knows what the candidates are going to bring to the presidency if they get it, unless they've just woke up from hibernation.

It shouldn't matter what they say at this point. Look at what they've done in the past. That's who they are. They'd promise to remove Mike Brown as owner of the Bengals and start Brady Quinn at QB if they thought it could get a couple million Ohio residents to vote for them in November.
