UFC: Anderson Silva says he'll retire next year

Featured Replies

Anderson would absolutely own GSP. While were at it the guy you call overrated Rich Franklin would also wreck GSP. Hendo would probably beat him as well. GSP is a great fight but only at 170. I dont think he is the type of fighter who can move up weight divisions and be successful.

Just keep watching Silva, he will show you and all of us that he is the best in the world at 185 and if the fights happen possibly even 205. He is a serious wrecking machine that right now seems unstoppable.

In the UFC..........how many are top 10 now?

Franklin, Henderson and Marquardt are in the top 10 of virtually every list you can find.

I love the way you criticize Anderson Silva and the UFC "hype machine" while avoiding the question of who the guys you've named have ever beat.

The facts, as I already laid out, provide no support for your assertions. Both guys have beat up on inferior opponents and have lost when facing high level competition. (Not to mention losing to guys with losing records).

Apparently, you're blinded by your hatred of Silva and the UFC. The records of Silva's opponents in the UFC and elsewhere speaks for itself. No fighter faces top 5 opponents every fight, but, in his UFC stint, Anderson Silva has yet to face a can like the guys you name regularly do.

And, please, Anderson Silva was never on the verge of getting hammered by Travis Lutter. He got out of the bad position he was in the first time he tried and made Lutter tap out. And, don't forget that Silva had surgery on both knees less than a month before that fight and still won with relative ease.

I'm still waiting for you to actually support what you say rather than just disagreeing because you don't like the fighter and organization we're talking about. Give me some real facts. Oh wait, you can't...because there aren't any.

Really?

Share your insight and I'm being serious, as only a handful of my friends think so......and they all think Im nuts when it comes to some thing I believe/think about MMA fighters.

Break the fight down for us...I'd love to hear how GSP would beat Anderson Silva. In fact, I'd love to hear someone try to defend GSP having an advantage in any area.

Silva is bigger. He's stronger. He has the reach advantage. He's more skilled on the ground. He's a better striker. He's mentally stronger. What am I missing?

GSP dominates the 170 pound class because he's stronger and more athletic than his opponents. He typically dominates them with his strength, taking them down and overpowering on the mat...and if he happens to fight a guy who can match his strenght, he's too athletic and too good on his feet. He's a great, great fighter...one of the best in the world, no doubt.

However, all of his strengths and the things he uses to dominate at 170 would turn to disadvantages vs. Silva. Silva does everything that GSP does and then some, he does it better, and he does it in a heavier weight class. If they fought...

Standup - Silva is a superior striker. He could use his reach to pick GSP apart from outside or he could dominate him in the clinch.

Ground - GSP's ground game thrives on overpowering his opponents. That wouldn't be an option against a bigger, stronger Anderson Silva. Once that's out the window, Silva the more skilled BJJ fighter...so he'd have the strength/ground-and-pound advantage and he'd have the submission advantage.

Silva would win this fight however he wanted to. GSP wouldn't offer as much of a challenge as Hendo, Franklin and Marquardt simply because the size and strenght disadvantage would be too great. Especially when you're facing a fighter that's more skilled to start with.

GSP vs. BJ Penn would be a far more interesting and competitive super fight.

And, Anderson Silva would need to move up to 205 for a competitive super fight...

While I do think Anderson Silva would beat GSP in a super fight, I think GSP would put up a great fight and he'd have the chance to win. He's got GREAT wrestling and could probably get Silva to the ground. From there he'd just have to stay out of Silva's submissions. Don't forget that GSP did very well against Fitch, and Fitch has a blackbelt in BJJ I believe...

Silva would obviously win the stand up IMO.

It's less about the skill level and more about the size and strength. Even if GSP could get Silva to the ground he couldn't do anything when he got there because Silva would be too strong. He could possibly prolong the fight by getting it to the mat, but he'd have no chance to win. The Fitch comparison is irrelevant because the size/strength is completely different...and he's not on the same planet as guys like Silva and GSP when it comes to the all-around combination of size, strength, athleticism, stand-up, ground game...

If you could somehow take GSP's skill set and place it in a body that's a few inches taller and several pounds heavier, then it could possibly be a competitive fight. Even in that scenario, Silva is the more skilled fighter. But, as they stand now, the fact that Silva IS more skilled, combined with the size and strength difference would be too much for GSP to overcome. He'd have no chance. The fight wouldn't make past two rounds, and there's a good chance it would be over in the first.

The fact that Dan Henderson got Silva to ground and couldn't mount any offense whatsoever should speak volumes about GSP's chances.

It just baffles me beyond belief that someone could have actually watched Anderson Silva dismantle elite fighters like Rich Franklin (twice), Nate Marquardt, and Dan Henderson and try to claim that he's over-hyped and overrated.

Anderson Silva walks around about 205 lbs if I'm not mistaken. Georges St. Pierre would definitely have to gain some weight to fight Silva, but it would be possible.

I do not think Georges would win, but I don't think it would be as lopsided as you believe. The weight difference isn't that big of a deal considering Anderson will most likely never be on top of GSP.

I think Anderson would win via TKO 2 or 3 rounds in...but I think Georges would have a shot at pulling off the upset.

I agree that Anderson won't be on top of GSP...the fight would never go to the ground until Silva knocked him out.

How much of his speed, quickness and athleticism would GSP give up trying to gain weight? He couldn't afford to give up any. And, the fact that he's putting on weight and Silva's cutting means there is going to be a big advantage there for Anderson on fight night. GSP wouldn't match up nearly as well as Dan Henderson and Rich Franklin did and Silva beat those guys with ease.

I hope they do fight, just so everyone can see him annihilate Georges like every other fighter who has stepped in the cage with him.

The only chance(s) Georges would have are the same ones every fighter has...either their opponent suffers an injury and can't continue, or he lands that lucky punch. The chance of a fighter landing that perfect shot is a possibility in any fight, but it's less likely in some than others. This is one where it would be highly unlikely. It would be a typical Silva fight...regardless of how long it lasts, he's always in control and it's just a matter of time before he finishes the fight with his precision striking and power.

I'm telling you, GSP vs. BJ Penn is a far more interesting and competitive matchup. If Silva wants competition, he's going to have to start his search against the top rated 205 pounders. The MW division has already proven it has nothing for him, and anyone from a lesser weight class would be completely overmatched. I would like to see Henderson get another crack at Silva...I don't think he'd beat him, but I'd still like to see him get one more shot. If anyone at 185 has a chance, I still think he's the guy.

I would like to see Silva and Henderson fight at 205, not 185.

I want to make something clear, I do not think Silva is a bad fighter, not by any stretch of the imagination. He has beat everyone the UFC has put in front of him, with only Dan being "Elite." I do no think the others are, maybe Marquardt but honestly I don know about him.

I think all the other guys I listed would beat, and some of them badly, Franklin and he is what everyone was measured to.

Mousasi and Galesic will be fighting for Affliction/ProElite soon so we shall see them against better comp.

Manhoef has retired as of today, childs health problems.

That sucks I liked watching Manhoef fight. Mousasi is good I would like to see him fight some better competition tho. Galesic Im still unsure about.

Still think people understimate Franklin just because how bad Silva beat him twice. When some fighters other than Silva and Machida start to whoop up on him then maybe it will be justified. As of right now just dont think it is.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disgree on that point...it never looked like, nor did I get the impression, that Silva was in danger of losing that fight.

I don't view it as a serious threat unless you get caught in a submission or get obviously rocked and weather the storm. Neither happened to Silva in that fight...Lutter just maneuvered to an advantageous position and didn't do anything with it.

:thumb: You and I, see eye to eye on that one. I didn't intend for it to sound like that either.

They have not, but I ask you also, who has The Spyder beat?

If I simply said Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson, lit a cigar, and walked away slowly, that would more than Manhoef.

I'll go ahead and answer that for you. Nobody.

BTW, is that the same Melvin Manhoef that lost three days ago a minute and twenty-eight seconds into the fight?

Is that the same Zelig Galesic that lost three days ago a minute and twenty-seven seconds into his fight? And has lost three of his last six fights?

Please.

 Seriously, this is hilarious. The simple fact is Anderson Sylva is indestructible Deal with it.

He did get mounted by Travis Lutter.

He was suffering from a massive injury, and he still was in no danger of losing the fight.

:thumb: Franklin was one of the most dominant middleweight champions of all time until Anderson Sylva stepped up, and he's just a freak.
