Also, keep in mind that Silva hasn't just beat his opponents. He has thoroughly dominated each and every one of them to the point that he has hardly been threatened in a fight, and never seriously threatened.

 

Now, I ask you, who has Melvin Manhoef and Zelg Galesic ever beat to make me think they could outstrike Anderson Silva, much less beat him?

He was never seriously threatened. Lutter threw a flurry of punches but landed only a few and none were real clean, hard shots. Then Silva escaped and won the fight. That is the only time he's even been mildly threatened since coming to the UFC.

 

Lutter had Franklin in similar trouble on the ground before ultimately losing. Lutter's a skilled fighter, but he lacks the training, heart and conditioning to take it a step further, IMO.

Lutter was gassed and I believe he went for an arm-bar from the mount (stupid move against another BJJ Black belt), other wise he could have done more damage. Would he have won? I do not know, but he seriously threatened Silva.

I don't view it as a serious threat unless you get caught in a submission or get obviously rocked and weather the storm. Neither happened to Silva in that fight...Lutter just maneuvered to an advantageous position and didn't do anything with it.

Just to drive this point home...let's analyze Manhoef and Silva since June 28, 2006 when Silva debuted in the UFC.

 

In that span, Manhoef has fought 12 times, winning 9 of them. The combined record of those nine is 97-70-5 (.564 win %). Only 4 of them have winning records. The combined record the opponents he lost to is 40-9-1 (.800 win %), including a loss to Dong Sik Yoon who is 4-6.

 

Contrast that with Silva, who has fought 7 times and won them all. The combined record of his opponents is 139-35-2 (.790 win %). He's handed Rich Franklin 2 of his three career losses (the other is Lyoto Machida) and defeated a guy who held belts in two weight classes in PRIDE.

 

Simply put, Manhoef is the guy who builds his reputation on impressive wins against inferior competition. When he steps up, he loses. Silva not only beats everyone put in front of him, but he dominates them...and the majority of them have been top level middleweights.

He's great ground fighter and that's what it's going to take to beat Anderson Silva @ 185...there are no fighters in that weight class that can exchange with Silva on the feet and win. At 205, that might become a possibility, but at 185 it isn't. (And a "superfight" between GSP and Anderson Silva between an absolute massacre. Just had to get that in.)
