More than any game so far this season, this one will determine if Boyle is back to being a contender for the 4A title. If they aren't ready for this one, they probably will not be ready for anyone. This rivalry and the Danville one were the games that made Chuck Smith's dynasty begin. Beating Danville in '96 gave Boyle instant credibility but beating Lex Cath those 4 times in '99 and '00 put the Rebels on the State Map.

I think that Boyle has to prove more than Lex Cath all of the pressure is on BC because just about everybody expects them to win big. Will be a great game wish I could watch this one.

The teams are close enough that it may be bad in the long run for whoever wins this game because of the additional incentive for the loser to win a rematch in the playoffs. And yes I think it will come to that.

I agree with you. I could see these 2 teams definitely back in the Regional Finals and maybe even their top 3 teams winning first round games.

I like you feel the REBELS played a little flat againist Lafayette. However we should look at the entire situation. Boyle had just came off of a week of tremendous emotion. The Boyle/Danville game was one of the biggest rivalrys in the country(per rivals.com).:dancingpa These kids read and were well aware that Lafayette was down a little from past years. Thus causing them to maybe look past them and forward to Lex. Cath. which is a huge district game. Rest assured French will have his REBELS ready for a shown down friday night.

I think it would provide "incentive" as you say. However historically these two teams reveal that whoever wins the regular season matchup prevails in the playoffs. This was true for Lex Cath in '98 (I think the Knights swept Boyle in 2 games that year.) and last year.

 

Boyle pulled the same trick in '99 and '00 when the Rebels pulled out classic matchups in both the regular season and playoffs. (I think those were the only 4 games Lex Cath lost in those 2 years.)

Thanks for the compliment. Your comments about the history of the two teams are valid and that may be the case again this year. Coach Letton seems to try and build momentum during the regular season more than coach Sphire which is one difference between the two. Last year Catholic was a much better team as the year progressed and I expect the same this year especially with all the new players gaining experience.

 

The Knights should be ready to take on the likes of Boyle but one never knows how a young team will handle adversity. If the Knights can get an early lead I think they will be all right. I agree about the onus being on BC. It will be a nail-biter I believe.

Is it really going to be enough for everyone here if the rebels beat Lex. Cath. this Friday? It seems like every week so far people are saying "We'll see this weekend if the rebels have truly returned" Look at what they've done so far (180 degree turnaround since this time last season) If that is not enough to justify them being back in the thick of things then one can only wonder if ANYTHING short of a State Championship is going to convince some folks! Personally, i'm extremely proud of our guys and of the way coach French has had a positive impact on their overall winning attitude so far this season. It's a pretty good feeling THIS SEASON going into games knowing we have a very good chance at a victory and that people are taking us serious again. GO REBELS. Win or lose, the rebel family KNOWS we have a team full of CHAMPIONS!!

I am also convinced the Rebels are back, win or lose. I think last weeks letdown against Lafayette was expected by most with the game being between Danville and Catholic, and we did get the win. Coach French and the staff have the Rebels playing good solid football with a defense that is playing great. I think the Rebels pull this one out thanks to another solid outing by the D. Once again, I think we'll need to control clock with another good performance from MacSherra on the ground to keep Catholics high powered offense off the field. We will also need to limit our turnovers and penalties. This game has huge implications with the winner more than likely having home field advantage in the playoffs.

Boyle County has been impressive in their wins against schools that traditionally are strong but none of whom have a winning record yet. LexCath also has a subpar record so if Boyle wins nothing changes. 4A overall doesn't look very strong from what I've seen so far. Whoever wins it all will probably be questioned for having not been adequately challenged. The LexCath game at Highlands would be good for Boyle if LexCath could pull a huge upset after having possibly lost to Boyle.

I think you might have misinterpreted my meaning when I was calling this game a barometer of "if they are back." Up to now Boyle has shown that they indeed are much better than they've been in a couple of years. However up until now they have not played one of the traditional power of their own class. Lex Cath is that.

 

If Boyle beats them or plays with them then that is the very indication needed to say, "the Rebels are back in the hunt." I've never demanded a state title as you seem to insinuate (and I don't know of too many Boyle fans that have felt that way). All most of us have wanted is for Boyle to "be in the hunt and contention." They have not been that in the last 2 years.
