Maybe Gatorade breaks would be better, seems like it replaces what comes out of your body better than water does in the short term

What are the rules for water breaks?

I didn't play all that long ago, late 90's, but three water breaks for a 1 1/2 hour practice seemed like more than we would get.

That was a vacation for us. However, I'm glad they do it like they do now, not only is it healthier, but I think that it keeps your team sharper during practice.

IMO I think water is better than Gatorade. Gatorade is better before competition thand during because of the sugar in it. Gatorade seems to make you more thirsty. Most people don't know that Gatorade has as much sugar as soft drinks.

Update...

The one young man was treated and released from hospital. The other young man is in critical condition.

My prayers to his family, friends and team.

Wow. Definitely prayers headed that way.

It's not the sugar, but electrolytes(think that's the word) that Gatorade provides. Doctors always prescribe it for athletes with asthma and other conditions over water though like you say it does almost equal soft drinks with its sugar content. Have seen professional athletes on the sidelines drink a gatorade and wash it down with water.

I'm guessing that the players were not taking care of their bodies outside of practice. 3 water breaks for 5-10 minutes is plenty. We tell our players that outside of practice, they need to be lots of water before and after practice, at least a gallon. The water during practice is just to replenish some of what they have lost during practice. It's more about what you do before and after. Regardless of that, it's still a shame for that kid to be in the hospital. Best of luck to him, but knowing what I know, I'm not getting my hopes up as he's not doing too well.

My quess is that when this is all said and done, that the lack of water was not a factor as much as a pre condition. Prayers to all.

From what I have been told...TIFWIW...that it wasnt the water breaks that were the problem...but the amount of conditioning that was given. Keep in mind that 3 players fell out...not 2. 2 went to the hospital. Someone posted on the CJ site that the players ran 18 200's. That seems to be pretty extensive...Hope all involved come out OK. But I WAS NOT there...and received the info second hand. From everything Ive ever been told Stintson is a really good guy.

Rule 13

Word is that Stinson is going to be fired, do not know the validity. There are players and witnesses that said he ran them 45 minutes without water because they would not run hard.

OB, well I'm just not gonna say anything.^^^

Praying for the sophomore.

I played in 70/71 and we got water once and it was at the end of practice. This was before any heat index and boy I hated it. Later I was surprised at how wrong that was. My son played at Male and they had breaks, but also a kid could at any time go get as much water as he wanted.

I agree with you totally. And athletes don't take care of their bodies after practice like they should either by replacing what they have lost.

Look without a doubt this is all a sad thing to have happen. I am of the opinion that many times kids are just no longer able to handle the heat because of inactivity/exposure to the heat on a regular bases. Having the comforts that we all enjoy have brought along a whole other generation of young adults. I am sure many will disagree and yes we know more now than we did 30-35 years ago. Having said that, kids are for the most part, do not have "it" as much as kids in the past. This is not the fault of anyone or thing and I am sure the measures that are in place take into consideration these assumptions. I hope it all turns out well for everyone and my prayers go to the families, teammates, coaches and other parties. Lets just realize it is very different for this generation as it will be for ones to follow.

Sad news...the player has passed away as of 4pm this afternoon. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
