McCain and his Houses

Featured Replies

Good God. Has this country become so messed up that its now a shame or a problem to be wealthy? I thought that accumulating money was a capitalistic goal? I seriously have to wonder about what Obama is if he attempts to make an issue as to McCain owning so many homes. As for him not knowing how many houses, what's the big deal? His wife is independently wealthy and has holdings that McCain may not be sure of. So what and good for her. An as for the attempt to try to pin back the elitist charge, all wealthy people are not elitists (the name Sam Walton comes to mind). This is just more of the political crud that makes me sick. If Obama has a problem with McCain's wealth, it plays heavily into the charges from the right that Obama is a socialist. He may want to rethink this attack. Forget "the One", I'm beginning to think the name "Robbing Hood" may be more appropriate if he keeps up this line of thinking.

Please get this election over with. Either one of these guys will be better than who we've had for the past eight years.

Obama has opened a can of worms here.

He now subjects himself to the Rezko deal.

This will be short-lived.

The one that will dog Obama is going to be the three votes for infanticide.

They had audio audio on Hannity last night of Obama saying it was too much of burden on the women for another doctor to be there to handle the baby if it lives through an abortion attempt.

Rather he wants to trust the doctor that was just trying to kill the baby to handle the now living baby correctly.

Obama is getting some bad advice and I doubt that Obama gave a second thought to his own house and the shady deal with Rezko when he began taunting McCain. McCain's family owns some rental properties and he does not personally manage them. Big deal.

Obama and his wife wanted a bigger house than he could afford, so he accepted a favor from a shady supporter who is now a convicted felon to enable his family to live beyond its means. Very big deal.

As big of a deal as the S&L boys that McCain was connected to in the 80's. Come on Aces, there's enough mud for both of these boys to be stained in this.

Come on LN, you know as well as I do it is about perception. We are in the midst of economic crisis in many areas of the country. There are people who are struggling to keep their one home. For a presidential candidate to say, "I don't know how many homes I have," is bad PR. If he had said 5 or 10 and been proven wrong later that would have been fine. But he didn't. It's no more political crud than any other IMO.

I thought that McCain being among the Keating Five would be a big issue in this election, but in this 24-hour news cycle age in which we live, Obama's recent scandals will easily trump a scandal that occurred before some voters were even born.

Obama's shady deal with Rezko has not yet even begun to receive the kind of scrutiny that the Keating Five scandal received nearly 20 years ago. Obama made a huge blunder opening the housing/Rezko can of worms.

However, Obama's three-time defeat of the BAIPA will become a much bigger factor than Rezko. Voters can easily understand the evil of withholding medical treatment of a newborn baby and it will be very easy for McCain to demonstrate Obama's blatant lies on the subject. The ads will probably follow a script along these lines:

  • Senator Obama failed to protect the lives of live, newborn babies when he had the opportunity because of his loyalty to special interest groups.

  • Senator Obama failed to tell the truth about his role in denying medical care to newborn babies and continued to lie even after conclusive proof of his role became public.

  • If newborn babies could not trust Senator Obama to provide them with health care,do you really want him to decide what kind of health care you deserve?

No mud is necessary for McCain to defeat Obama. All McCain needs to do is to make sure voters know how extreme Obama's political positions have been and he can do that by educating voters about Obama's voting record and his inexperience.

Mud is about the only tool Obama has at his disposal in this campaign and unfortunately for him, he will not occupy the high ground if he chooses to wage a mud fight with McCain.

It is interesting that liberals had no problem with John Forbes Kerry being married to a wealthy woman during the last election cycle but now want to make Cindy McCain's wealth a tool in their class warfare.

The presumptive Republican nominee, though, may have some wiggle room in explaining why he couldn't immediately provide an answer when asked by Politico how many houses he and his wife, Cindy, own. Sen. McCain himself does not own any of the properties. They're all owned by Cindy McCain, her dependent children and the trusts and companies they control. - McCain family owns 8 properties

Some of you might recall that, when asked how many SUVs he owned, John Kerry replied, "None,'' based on the fact that the vehicles in which he rode belonged to his family. McCain tried to give an honest answer to a similar question and Obama is ridiculing him for it. It seems some Democrats cannot handle the truth.

I'm not crazy about the current one, but neither one of these two candidates is the answer, either. We have no real choice in this election:madman:. We, as a nation, are in deep, deep trouble. I heard someone the other day talking about the election sum it up pretty well. "Things are about to get bad or really bad depending on who wins."

Side note: I don't care if he owns 666 houses. If he can make the kind of money to do it, more power to him. Most of us work to make the most money we possibly can for the job we do. Not many of us would stay put if we went to work and they said they were going to start paying us 50% of what we were making. (Also, if we could vote ourselves a raise every year or two, I think the majority of us would do it, too.):thumb:

As to the bolded part, I don't think I said to the contrary. But evidently you agree that its crud and nothing more.

And can we stop the economic crisis stuff? Talk about hyperbole. People act like its the Great Depression. Its not. Of course the economy isn't humming right now. That's due in part to the over building of homes. Those home builders now hurting forget that just a couple of years ago they were earning record profits. That's due in part to foolish bankers that got caught up in the craze to maximize earnings to try to drive their stock prices higher. That's due in part to reckless borrowing by consumers that overextended themselves and actually believed those hokey and irresponsible real estate infomercials. Unfortunately the dollar is down, bringing with it the adverse effects on our economy, because the Fed has had to force interest rates down because of the poor judgements made by builders, banks and home purchasers. Its painful right now for some, for sure, but our economy will come back. Don't overreact to problems that will right themselves.

Perhaps in your part of Virginia it is tougher than other areas due to, perhaps, poor economic development planning and a concentration of jobs in one industry. Jobs have been lost because the textile industry is a low tech, cheap labor industry. Well duh. It's an industry that was set to be killed by cheap overseas labor. Putting up trade barriers wasn't going to stop it from happening however. If the political and business leaders didn't see that coming years before it happened, they were pretty naive in my opinion. Perhaps the leaders tried to diversify the economy and were unsuccessful. I'm not familiar with your region so I don't know if my supposition is correct. I do know that from my years on our economic development board we have been very cognizant of the need to attract different types of jobs and businesses to N. Ky to avoid the type of situation that I think your area is experiencing. If my supposition is correct, the blame for the hurt in your region falls at the feet of the local leaders, not the White House and the fact that McCain doesn't know how many houses he and his wife own is just another red herring designed to falsely mislead Americans and to re-direct the real blame from the problems being suffered in our economy. But if it plays well in the polls, I guess politicians being politicians don't care about being honest.

And while I'm on the economy and jobs being lost, jobs being lost is nothing new. The whip and buggy jobs went away. The rice jobs in the deep South went away. Its happened over and over again throughout this country's history. People just are upset that instead of the jobs going to a different area of the country, they are going overseas. But they are gone none the less. The textile business owners failed to see what was coming. The workers that failed to go to college but rather took jobs in the textile industry right out of high school failed to see it coming. Either that, or they decided to milk it as long as they could for what it was worth. Whose fault is it other than theirs that the jobs are now gone?

I agree with you that its about perception because perception unfortunately is all that matters to way too many lazy people too content to believe the stupid political snippets and sound bites they hear. I personally see the number of homes that McCain owns as a good thing; a sign of what one can accomplish in this country if one wants to work hard and take economic risks. Its nothing to be ashamed of. Does it bother me that he didn't know how many homes he had? Not in the least. I'd rather he know what's going on with Russia, with Syria, etc. I'd rather he know what military improvements are taking place in China and Russia. I'd rather he know what measures are being made to improve our intelligence gathering capabilities. I couldn't give a rat's tail end that he doesn't know how many homes he and his wife have.

I really wonder what is Obama's real message in his attack? That no American should be allowed to be wealthy? To own multiple homes? That's not only nuts, its un-American and anti-capitalistic. I almost hate to say it because I don't like aligning myself with the far right mud slingers, but Obama's criticism of McCain is more akin to socialism than capitalism. Are the right wingers on to something about Obama? If you think that there are a lot of unemployed people now, take away the financial incentives of accumulating wealth by raising income taxes, increasing capital gain taxes and enacting prohibitive estate taxes, and you will see a whole lot less jobs being created by wealthy individuals. Then we'll have real problems in the U.S.

If nothing else, the McCains evidently purchased their homes with honest money. The jury is still out with me as to whether Obama can say the same thing about his home in Chicago.

As big of a deal as the S&L boys that McCain was connected to in the 80's. Come on Aces, there's enough mud for both of these boys to be stained in this.

Oh baloney. Please take 5 minutes and do a little research on the Keating 5 investigation and you'll find the Senate ethics committee's special investigator (a Democrat by the way) recommended no, zero, zilch, nada, action or sanctions be taken against McCain and felt he did nothing wrong or improper. Let me repeat that: he did nothing wrong or improper. What did the Senate do (led by Democrats by the way again) sanctioned him anyway. Why? Pure dang politics. The other 4 of the Keating 5 were also Democrats and the special investigator did recommend sanctions against them. There was no way in Hades that the Democrat controlled Senate was going to sanction the 3 Democrats and not do something against the one Republican even though their own investigator found he had done nothing wrong and recommended no action against him. Jeesh.:irked:

Be real and practical. Both sides are so full of hypocricy on issues it is sad. You are right, why was there no outcry on the Heinz money?

But it's not just about money. How often did the GOP make family values the issue of the day and/or decry Clinton's adultery when many of them were either divorced or had likewise been involved in affairs.

I'm not disagreeing with you that it's not the real issues we face, but McCain's blunder does not play well with common Mom and Pop. I'm not going to argue to defend it, just analyze it.

Some of you guys are missing the point. Its not about being wealthy. So the fortune of McCain's wife or the fortune of Kerry's wife is irrelevant. Its the irony of having a candidate say "I don't know" when foreclosures are talked about daily. That doesn't play well with voters who may be saying "I'm struggling to keep my house and he doesn't even KNOW how many he HAS."

Most don't begrude wealth. As long as it was gained legally more power to them. However, voters want to feel somewhat connected and "I don't know. My staff will have to get back to you" doesn't give a warm and fuzzy connected feeling.

THAT's the point.

Had McCain given the Kerry-esque, but literally true, answer of "None," then it would have been an issue. Obama has been caught wagging a metaphorical finger at critics of his facilitation of infanticide and now there is documentary proof that he, not his critics, lied. That will be a big issue.

Unless the Obama campaign can link a convicted organized crime figure (such as Tony Rezko, for example) to the purchase of any of the McCain family's eight houses, the McCain houses will not be a pivotal issue in this campaign.

It is Obama, not McCain, who has a housing problem.

He should have just said "I don't know, that's above my payscale".

So is John McCain an elitist?

Not sure, but his wife sure is.
