Consider this from the Highlands perspective...

 

Highlands already schedules at least a game a year against a team that HHS is the decided "underdog" in. These games, unlike games against teams like LexCath or Central, are usually hard for HHS to win (case in point: Colerain this year). By doing this, Coach Mueller and HHS are given the opportunity to play a "superior" team during the regular season which is of course helpful in preparing for the postseason. This game is almost always played in the Cincinnati area (be it an away game against a Cincy team or a game associated with the Herbie or the Prep Classic played in Cincy). This is good because it saves HHS a long trip. Given that HHS already has this system in place, what's the point of adding another game that HHS will likely not win to the schedule? Let's face it... if Trinity and Highlands played once a year for 10 straight years, the Bluebirds would probably win 2-3 of them. I don't see how a game against Trinity is going to teach HHS something about itself that a game against Elder or Colerain wouldn't. Plus, at least HHS doesn't have to travel so far to play the likes of Elder and Colerain. Under Ohio's Harbin system, these top-tier Ohio teams absolutely love to schedule Highlands, so it's not hard to arrange these contests. In addition, HHS' recent performance against Louisville 6A teams (Saint X and Male) has been frankly less than impressive, AND in recent years (unlike several of the years when HHS has played a big Cincy school) Highlands did not go on to win state (2001, 2002, 2005, 2006). So, it's not like these games against Male and Saint X were particularly helpful in winning a state championship that year. Why would playing Trinity be any different?

 

Why should HHS change the current situation it has created for itself???

 

PS: Those years I listed above, when HHS played either Male or Saint X (2001, 2002, 2005 and 2006) are exactly the same years that HHS has NOT made it to the state title game since 2000 (HHS won state in 2004 and 2007 and was runner-up in 2003). Perhaps it's bad luck for the 'Birds to play the Louisville "Big Three!" AND, some of those games have gone pretty badly for HHS (cases in point: a 0-45 defeat by Saint X in 2005, a 0-30 loss to Male in 2001, and a 21-35 loss to Saint X in 2006).

Jbwill2 - I couldn't disagree more! This game would be good for Highlands and good for Trinity. Not just financially, but it gives the Birds an (in-state) opponent that they have a realistic chance of competing with in most years. You suggested we've played poorly against Male. I don't think this has always been the case. I think you're terribly underestimating Highlands.

 

The "long trip" argument doesn't make much sense either, in light of trips to Hopkinsville, Madison Central, Louisville Central and many other out of town sites. This game (or games) would alternate between a site in our area and a Louisville site. You know -- Louisville -- where they play that big game in December.

 

This game would be far more exciting and meaningful for both our players and fans than an Elder or even Colerain match-up. And it would tend to be more competitive. On top of that, as has already been pointed out, this would be the talk of the state and quite a showcase for all involved. True, HHS plays games at Louisville Central, Madison Central, LexCath and Hopkinsville, BUT Highlands stands a better-than-average chance of winning against these programs. My point is that if HHS is going to go through the trouble of playing against teams they will likely lose to, at least let it be games that are close by (the idea of paying for all that travel expense for a 2-3 TD loss doesn't sit well with me). There are plenty of top-tier teams for HHS to play that are located close to Fort Thomas... the 'Birds don't have to travel 1.5 hours to play against first-rate competition!

 

Also, I think I must challenge your point that a Trinity-Highlands game would be more competitive than, say, a HHS-Elder game. I'd take HHS' chances against a team like Elder or Moeller over HHS' chances against Trinity right now. I just don't see how this series would help out HHS, compared to the current system in place.

 

Plus, do you really think that HHS would win more than 3 out of every 10 of these match-ups???

 

And yes, I know that my viewpoint on this issue is going to be completely opposite of what the Bluebird faithful believe. Gosh, I dread to read what Leatherneck says about this when he reads it!!!!!

Come on now... are you telling me that over the past 2-3 years Elder has been a better football team than Trinity?!?!?! Trinity gave Cincy Saint X all they wanted and more for 3 quarters last year... Trinity would have wiped out Elder by at least three scores in 2007.

Thanks for all of your input. It just makes no sense to me that the two best and most decorated programs in the state don't play each other. I for one, would rather play Highlands than any other team. Until someone else catches up with the two of us, and that cannot happen for at least 6 more years, I would rather play the best and lose, than to not play at all. JMHO

This game would have been nice to see the last few years, but HHS didn't want any part of Brohm, Petrino or Stein.

Have a better idea!!!! Since CovCath plays Louisville St. X already, why not make it a DH with T playing The Team from Ft. Thomas and CovCath playing St. X. You could play the game one year at the Pizza Box then the other at Nippert Stadium on the campus of UC.

I think you need to keep some things in mind when you point out those losses that I have bolded,. In 05 it was no doubt an old fashioned butt whipping by X. But one needs to remember that the week before on a Saturday, we had played Colerain at PBS in very high heat. While within one point of Colerain at half, in the second half they clobbered us. Part of that had to do with Colerain's greater depth and their fantastic team (one of their lbers went to Michigan, one went to OSU, a lineman went to OSU and I think several others also got D-1 scholarships) but part of the second half blow out was caused by the fact that Colerain knocked our starting qb and back up qb out of the game. The following week, on a short week, we traveled to Lou. X with a totally beat up team and during the game lost even more players (my son included with a concussion). When we got beat by X in 06, while it was a two td margin of victory, it actually was a closer game than that. We lead at half by a point and were within one td most of the second half (X would go up by two tds and then we'd answer, back and forth throughout the second half. We had a nice drive going at the end of the game when a desperation pass was intercepted for the final two td margin). Also keep in mind that we played Elder the week before X in 06. We came out of the Elder game beat up. Several starters did not practice at all the week of the X game and at least one starter did not play at all against X. When you don't have much depth to begin with, being without a starter and playing kids that are beat up really takes a toll. Anyone at that game knew that the Birds were very competitive with X in 06. It most certainly was not a blow out. I'm not going to say that we'd have beat X if we hadn't played Elder the week before (a game in which I don't think any of the starters came off the field), but I think the game would have been even closer.

 

I'm with BF. I'd rather play the Big Three than the Cinti schools, although its nice getting respect from the Cinti schools. While they relish their victories, most rationale Cinti football fans really respect Highlands and CovCath football.

 

As for the long drive argument, I don't think it'd be that big of a deal.

 

Maybe the T AD should give Dale a call and see if that could happen. I'd love for it to be next year, but as I understand it, Dale pretty much has that filled. And if it would happen, I pray that the game doesn't follow a week when we play another quality program much larger than us.
