Letter from Bob and Walt to Reds fans

Votto may go in a package deal to return a starter or established left fielder if Alonso has a good winterball season.

I disagree completely there. Votto is here to stay for a while, and is in position to become the clubhouse leader...

I think they are in a tough spot with Votto. Drafting Alonso ahead of Beckham was puzzling to me. If they think Votto is ticketed to left field if Alonso can make the big club, why aren't they giving him some time out there now when they are out of the race?

Next year's free agent market isn't overwhelming. If they want a solid #2 or #3 starter, it's going to have to be through a trade of an established MLB'er.

There are a few options there that involve Votto, Alonso and E5. I don't think Alonso will be that far advanced in 6 months though...

Are you suggesting E-5 is gone from 3B? Alonso or Votto moves there?

E-5 to LF or 1B.

IF Harang can return, I don't think have to have a #2 or #3 starter. It is always nice, but not an immediate need IF Harang can return.

I like a starting rotation of a healthy Harang, Arroyo, Volquez and Cueto.

I wouldn't be shocked if E-5 becomes E-3 next year, with Votto going to the outfield.

Votto is just returning from a family issue, so I don't think it's fair to judge where he has been playing since the Dunn and Griffey moves. I'd be surprised to see him not get some time in LF over the next 6 weeks...

Get used to the middle of the pack again next year. They need another #2 or #3 starter next year to make a serious run at the playoffs.

I think you also have to involve Keppy in the 1B/3B/LF debate.

I can see E5 playing E5/E3/E7.

Votto can play 1B or LF.

Alonso can play 1B and maybe 3B.

Keppy can fill in at all 3 and then some.

Very interesting off season on the horizon...

I would think that would happen. But then again, they can't move Patterson out of center field with dynamite and a blasting cap even after promoting Dickerson. You would think they would tinker with Votto in left and Dickerson in center. The more Patterson plays over Dickerson, the more you would have to think they will resign him over the winter.

They have done all that they could to keep Patterson as a defensive replacement before the trades and injury to Hairston. I know you are obsessed with him, but it makes little sense here...

Wasn't Dickerson the starting CF tonight?

Let me rephrase my question.

Don't you think that holes in the lineup and holes in the defense are more pressing needs?

From the Reds point of view, I don't know what you guys expect. All I've read on here is about how pathetic the pitching is and how there is no consistency past Cueto and Volquez. Harang may never be the same (see Mark Prior) and you never know which Arroyo will show up.

There are no holes in center field when Patterson is there. He can catch the ball and go get it. Defense isn't an issue.

Wow. Way off base on several levels. Not often you whiff like that...

No chance Walt wanted any of this. This is pure marketing and came from the Big Man.

There is no way to tell if he did or not. The only thing we have to go from is what it said. And it said Walt on it.
