Letter from Bob and Walt to Reds fans

Wow. Way off base on several levels. Not often you whiff like that...

Maybe, but if you don't add another arm to the current rotation, the Reds are a .500 team next year at best.

They are one of the worst defensive teams in baseball. Even a move to the middle of the pack is as good as adding an arm like Fogg with what they already have.

They can't consistently score 3 runs a game and play awful D. What a pitchers paradise...

Is Alex Gonzalez a FA after this year?

No. One more year on his deal...

If he returns, the middle defense gets that much better. Can Keppinger play third? If they bring in a 3B and move Encarnacion to first, is that an upgrade defensively?

Keppy is likely best suited to play 1st or 3rd defensively. The tea leaves say E5 is a guy that is likely to be moved if they are dealing this winter...

So basically, the infield defense will likely get better without adding anyone through free agency or trades?

If things go how I see them, yes...

So why not add another starter? Would an outfield of Dickerson, Hairston, and Bruce be an upgrade over what they have now?

They won't compete if they don't get a big time bat in FA. They have some money to work with.

I'm not opposed to another starter, but I don't see it as vital at this point.

Hairston can't stay healthy, and Dickerson is still a question mark. I'd be fine opening with those two, but I don't think it gets you very far...

So through trades and FA, how many vital pieces do you see the Reds adding over the winter?

How does Kepp at 3B, Gonzalez at SS, Votto at 1B improve the offense?

I see them adding a RH bat likely in the OF known for some pop and solid at the plate. Working a count is a must here.

There will be at least 2 and maybe 3 mid level guys added to the pen if they don't come from the Dunn/Junior trades.

It will be a lot easier to see what they are thinking if the young position guys stay healthy and get their shot.

This is the first offseason under Jockety, so it's hard to predict as things stand...

Keppy and Votto are guys that can spray the gaps over relying on a bloop and a bomb. The latter is a style we've been force fed since Leatherpants designed GASP.

With the smoking sections eliminated, they could easily retain the seating capacity to move the walls in LF and RF back at least 5 rows...
