August 18, 200818 yr On Abortion On the rich and middle classes Just a couple of videos from the forum at Saddleback Church in California. The entire forum is broken into 10 parts on youtube. Did you watch, what did you think?
August 18, 200818 yr This is why Obama backed out of debating McCain "anytime, any place." Obama knew that he would get his clock cleaned and so did his handlers. Obama is lucky that he appeared separately from McCain and that Rick Warren asked no follow up questions.

Obama is lucky that he appeared separately from McCain and that Rick Warren asked no follow up questions. I don't think it was Rick's intention to "promote" either candidate or hold up a big debate forum. He wanted to provide a simple place where each candidate answered simple questions with no follow up or search for "cracks in the armor." He wanted the substance of what they said to stand or fall on its own.

August 19, 200818 yr I agree. That is probably why Obama accepted the invitation. McCain provided substance and Obama provided "nuance." You know, I honestly thought the same thing as I watched it. But as I reflected I came to realize that the American people like to see things in "black and white" if you can excuse the idiom. For McCain things appear more black and white - very similar to W. "You are either for me or against me and if you are against me you are evil - heh heh heh" Unfortunately the world is nuanced. Sometimes it takes a little more thought and a little less action to accomplish a goal. Abortion is a tough choice, and we should all work together to reduce the number each year. McCain want to make it illegal, Obama wants to create structure which render abortion "unnecessary" except for the health of the mother. McCain want to give "everybody" a tax cut. Obama wants to create a structure that maintains appropriate revenue and has people paying what he and others believe is a "fair share". You may disagree with the "fair share" part, but it is nuanced. McCain thinks we can drill our way out of the oil crisis. Obama is opposed to offshore drilling, but will compromise on the matter if it means that he can get passed a more comprehensive energy plan that would ultimately make the drilling unnecessary. Nuanced, yeah - but thoughtful as well.

Nuanced, yeah - but thoughtful as well. The event was a disaster for Obama. Obama has been courting evangelicals and his "above my pay grade" answer is not going to win many converts. Abortion may be a tough issue for most people but most people do not hesitate to condemn infanticide. Before the election, most voters will learn what the word "infanticide" means and they will learn which side of that issue Obama came down on when it mattered. Sometimes a thoughtful answer is indicative of a candidate trying desperately not to offend any supporters by artfully avoiding answering questions.

Obama seemed lost, he answered as to try and play both sides of the question. McCain stated his opinion quickly and to the point with no indecision at all. I now can clearly see why Obama wants to stay away from any of these type debates, he needs his "scripted and rehearsed questons and answers". JMO.

I feel like I am going through withdrawl symptoms. It felt like there was a debate on every other night during the primaries. I wish there were someway that the American people could witness more than a couple of debates in regard to filling the most important position on the planet. I am in favor of many debates with several different formats. I can't believe that will likely not happen this year.

I do know that I seem to have heard there could have been more had Obama not backed down / refused some "town hall" type debates that McCain wanted. This one was just a questionaire type thing but I can certainly see why he (Obama) wants no part of a debate that is not at least partially scripted, he imo had nothing in this one. Like another poster earlier pointed out, I liked this one bc it was an "information" type format rather than a debate and it did let us know what each person stood for (and imo more importantly what they did not stand for and what their belief's were)
August 20, 200818 yr Did you all catch the SC question where Obama nearly said Clarance Thomas was not "experienced enough"....he caught himself.
August 20, 200818 yr We all know that debates mean very little in the electoral process. Example: 2000 and 2004 Elections
August 20, 200818 yr We all know that debates mean very little in the electoral process. Example: 2000 and 2004 Elections Not really accurate.
August 20, 200818 yr Not really accurate. How so? It was the general consensus that Kerry won 2 if not all three of the debates in 2004. I believe 2000 was a split if not wins for Gore. Though you are correct, past debates have played major roles in past elections. But I believe with constant media bombardment, debates play less of a role each year.
August 20, 200818 yr How so? It was the general consensus that Kerry won 2 if not all three of the debates in 2004. I believe 2000 was a split if not wins for Gore. The general consensus? Please. You are applying this false general belief that Bush was soundly defeated during the debates and it was not reflected in the polls because the debates are inconsequential. You have it backwards. Bush went into the debates last year with a slight lead and he nursed it through all three. Kerry's performance was so terribly uninspiring and insubstantial he failed to move the polls against a weakened Bush. In 2000 Gore couldn't overcome himself in the first two. The SNL caricature was deadly accurate, but Bush's folksy, "I'm one of the guys" performance held the day against Gore's boredom and apparent lack of self-awareness. At the end of the day, the debates provide the most massive, widespread audience for the public to examine both candidates, and it is often the moments (or gaffes) during these debates that define an election.
