Milan is a top contender for their classification this yea and it was a good test for Mayfield this early in the year. Mayfield's offense was very vanilla in what they ran as they just wanted to get a look at how the offensive lines did on their assignments and pick ups. Defensively, Mayfield was in the right spots for most of the time, but just didn't break down on a couple of them.

 

Overall I believe that from what I saw on Friday this Mayfield team, barring injuries and anything else happening, that this team will be a very good team before the end of the year, and should make some noise come playoff time.

I believe this Mayfield squad will be hard to beat just as the 2A Admirals will be hard to beat...Limit mistakes...Leads to state championships...:thumb::thumb::thumb:

Alot will depend on the line play...They've got some good athletes at the skill positions in X.Shelton, T.Murrell, Richardson and even Guhy(QB) is a good athlete, but, it'll hurt losing "Rump" Noonan this year, as he was another RB capable of breaking one at any time..I expect them to struggle abit early against teams like Tilghman, Ft Campbell and Calloway Co., but, should be a solid 1a team by seasons end..If they can get solid play in the line and stay relatively healthy, as they don't have a ton of depth, they'll definately be in the hunt to make it to Louisville..

Mr Guru, It's too early to compare this team. Ft Campbell might be a good indicator.

Here is my take, Mayfield was outmanned in size and depth by Milan who is loaded this year. Talking with several of their fans I learned they have a preseason rank of 2nd to 4th in polls. A score varsity score was hard to determine because of the way the coaches would go starters then switch to JV but Milan's JV was light years ahead of Mayfield's. Varsity wise I thought the score was 30 to 7 Milan. Mayfield looked good early and played with them about even until Mayfield wore down. Some untimely turnovers, getting worn down late and getting burnt on some pass plays hurt Mayfield. Mayfield had to feel good about alot of what they saw though, at times Mayfield showed signs of greatness and the skill positions are going to give people fits. But on the other side of the coin one also had to be concerned over the mistakes, way to many turnovers and the pass defense gave up some plays despite the cover guys generally being in pretty good coverage but just being aware of where the ball was. Milan's qb and recievers also had alot to do with that, they may be as good as the Cards see all year. Mayfield was good on their word of throwing the crap out of the ball this year. All the signs of possible greatness showed up at times as did signs being about like last year. I predict the truth will fall somewhere in the middle with the team being a little better than last years but not on par with the Cards teams that have hardware. They are young and it is just hard to predict when they will grow up

You're right...I just remember when Mayfield beat them in 98, they went on to win out and win state that year and Mayfield went undefeated till the championship loss to Middlesboro and then Milan went undefeated the next year and won another state championship and one of them was a 2a championship and the other a 3a, but, I don't recall if they moved up or down in 99...

 

In '98, my sophomore year, we beat them in the regular season 19-7.....both teams made it to the state finals......we (mayfield) practiced at Murray state's field to get used to the turf, and Milan was also there practicing at the same time....they went on to win it while we got embarassed by Middlesboro.

The score of the scrimmage was Milan's varsity 2 td's with a missed extra point and a field goal to Mayfield's 1 score. The Mayfield Messenger says the same thing. I'm not going to be as harsh as Mr Toothpick was about the scrimmage as I thought we played very competive with their varsity.Milan had the better team but we played with them and we have lots of room for growth.Milan's JV team scored so much against ours it would be easy to get a score or so mixed in with varsity team.

Not being critical, but I looked at the pictures of the scrimmage before I read this thread. I was thinking the kid carrying the ball in the wrong hand was a fumble looking for a place to happen. Don't even know if he's the kid that fumbled or not, and he is by far not the only back that carries the ball in the wrong hand.

Mayfield and Milan seem to scrimmage every year. They are usually close with Milan winning more than they lose.

 

I have been to nearly everyone of these over the years and they are usually close but Mayfield has won the bulk of them, I would go so far as to say Mayfield has won this scrimmage 80% of the time but not as much so the last several years and certainly not this year
