3. Southwestern goes from 3-7 and missing the playoffs to #11? Pulaski County at #7?

Pulaski returns 15 starters off of a team that only lost 2 games last season, both being to Lincoln County.

Southwestern was 2-8, can't believe they are 11th. South Laurel finished 3rd in the district last fall,they return 8 starters on offence and 8 starters on defence and are 21st in 5A?

I have to disagree with CovCath at #2, I dont understand how they can be ranked this high and have everyone talking about them. Most of their skilled players have hardly seen any varsity playing time. I think Bowling Green should be in the 2 spot. If this is true though with Covcath at 2 than 5a most be weak this year and there must be a huge gap between #1 and #2

The key with CCH is that they return practically their entire lines along with their QB. They really came along last year, and some of the skilled players saw some time last year. The should be a very solid team this year, and it shouldn't take them half the year to gel like it did last year. Putting them at #2 is legit IMO, and it says nothing about the rest of the of state. As for Bowling Green, don't they only have 5 or so returning starters on offense and defense combined? While they probably will reload, there is more 'knowns' in Park Hills, and those 'knowns' put CCH as a contender this year.

Well, 5A might just be "down" some from 2007. It will be a tall order for Highlands to equal the program's success from 2007. BG lost a ton of D-I talent and experience. Owensboro lost a lot to graduation. Lincoln County lost a great coach. Johnson Central lost (probably) their best player to graduation. While programs like Christian County, Letcher County Central and CovCath may be better than their 2007 versions, I'd say that the safer bet would be that 5A in 2008 is not as strong at the top as 5A in 2007. We'll see, though.

 

And as for CovCath not deserving a top-two ranking, why not? Consider all the teams currently in 5A. Since Boyle County is in 4A and not 5A, this class of football has pretty much been dominated by HHS and CCH when it comes to winning titles, not to mention that CovCath is only ONE YEAR REMOVED from a state trophy. Add to this that there has (finally) been some off-season continuity to the coaching staff, plus a solid returning QB and very good line play, and it all adds up to Highlands and CovCath battling it out for 5A supremacy. Who knows, perhaps John Hardin will have a break-out season and win it all, or maybe BG will take that one final step that will mean a 5A title instead of being runner-up. But if I had to bet right now, I'd put my money on HHS and CCH. But the great thing is that soon enough we will all see how this shakes out.

I agree, after the Top 5 I'm as surprised as anyone about the rest of the rankings.:confused::confused::confused:

They (Southwestern) returns 20 starters.

Really nothing more. I don't know if Southwestern deserves a #11 ranking either, however there are a ton of kids returning not only at skill but line positions who are stronger, faster and more confident. They seem to be more "team" oriented as well. They have talent, coaching and showed some great "moments" during tournaments. Whether this will translate into a winning season is still a question mark. Scrimmages with Russell Co and Rock will help decide how high expectations could be for the year. I would rather we fly way under the radar for a while though!
