"The Race Card" in 2008

Featured Replies

So, you believe that in the first two examples, McCain chose the locations to take a swipe at Obama for being a member of a minority? Complaining about Obama suggesting that McCain will play the race card in the future is an example of McCain playing the race card? These seem like stretches to me.

Again, why can't Obama just run on his record and stop trying to paint McCain as a future racist and fear monger?

Why can't Senator McCain quit wining about someone saying he's a racist? As for being a fear monger I have to say that moniker is right on target.

I never said that it was a swipe at Senator Obama. The question was give examples of Senator McCain plaining or has played the race card. Believe it or not you can play the race card without attacking someone.

The first two are prime examples of how he went to a certain constituency and tried to pander to them. I, at first, had congratulated him for doing this. But, it has turned out to be the same old politics. Every 4 years give some lip service and they'll be content. Maybe it is they are not going to vote for me anyway so why worry about it.

Let me explain why I'm really disappointed with how this election is going. I was once a Reagan Democrat. I once embraced the conservative ideals that President Regan once championed. I thought the end had arrived for affirmative action. I thought that this country has arrived at a point were it didn't matter who a person is. Where he or she is from. I can see now that there is a lot more work to be done.

I think about my grandson who will be born at just about anytime now. He will have a muslim sounding name. His father is a follower of Minister Louis Farrakhan. This election has showed me that he has two strikes against him before he is even born.

I actually came very close to changing my registration from Democrat to Republican before the presidential election started. I can honestly say that I'm happy I didn't.

Considering the fact that more than 90 percent of registered African-Americans are backing McCain in this election and a much lower percentage of white Americans back the white candidate, it looks like there may be a lot more work to do in the African-American community than in the white community if we are ever going to have a color blind society.

As for your grandson, I agree that he will be born with at least one strike against him. Farrakhan is a lunatic so anybody who is associated him directly or indirectly is asking for trouble.

However, I do not believe having a Muslim name is a strike. Obama is doing quite well with his Muslim name, as are many Muslims who have similar names. One of the most popular local talk show hosts here is a Muslim but he sees radical Islamists pretty much the same way that I see them. His listeners could not care less that he has a Muslim name.

In this instance it seems to be Obama who is fear mongering, not McCain. Both candidates are disappointing me in how they are handling this election so far. Sad to say I am not surprised.

I'll ask again. Is America ready for a black president? This thread alone makes me wonder.

Like many things, I think America will need to be "drug" into accpeting a black president. After the first black person is elected, I feel everyone will wonder what the heck the big deal was in using race as a reason to not cast a vote for someone. Frankly, they're all politicians, those wackadoos who want to run the country. ;)

Hopefully America will decide it is not ready for another liberal president and race will have nothing to do with that decision. I hope that Jimmy Carter keeps posing for the cameras between now and the election as a blunt reminder of how things were the last time we made that mistake.

I think that you meant Obama in place of McCain, but my question is...what percentage of black voters traditionally vote for the democratic candidate? I was under the impression that it is a very high number.

Yes, I did think Obama and type McCain. Kerry received 88 percent of the black vote in 2004. What has been different in this election cycle was that blacks supported Obama over Clinton by a similar margin, despite there being very little difference in their political positions. Even J. C. Watts is considering voting for Obama this year.

Maybe they are sexist and not racist. ;)

So in the end we expect an increase of 2 percentage points?

:thumb: Excellent job of parsing my post to make your point stronger!

Maybe now you will explain why blacks voted for liberal Obama in similar numbers over liberal Hillary in the primaries.

Not only will around 90 percent of blacks vote for Obama in November, black turnout will most likely reach record levels. The percentage of whites who will vote for Obama may equal the level who voted for Kerry. If racism is a problem, Obama needs to investigate those facts before smearing McCain again.

Oh, I got your point. I was simply summarizing that while the reasons may change, the results will not. The vast majority of blacks will vote for the Democrat.

This is news?

Not news just the facts. Blacks have historically shown more racial loyalty to black candidates the whites have. It is hypocritical of Obama to imply that McCain will play the race card to his advantage when blacks have supported him in record numbers in large part because of his race. In a nutshell, if Obama had split the black vote in inverse proportion to the way that the white vote split for Hillary, then Hillary would be the Democratic nominee. Race was an issue in the Democratic primary and it will work to Obama's advantage this fall.

So if I'm reading you correctly, you're still saying that not much is going to change. Blacks will vote Democrat, right? So, what exactly has Obama gained by being black if in the end he's going to get the same vote?

Already asked and answered. Please reread my previous posts. (Record black turnout, 90% vote for Obama, etc. - in other words Obama will benefit greatly from almost monolithic black support combined with record black turnout and would not even be his party's nominee without it.)
