I graduated from Fletcher High School in Jacksonville, FL. I enjoyed my time there I guess, you can't beat going to a school just a few blocks from the beach. :lol:

 

I was just one of the students that did enough to get by, I don't regret that decision, but still enjoyed my time there.

I've talked about this before - the pros and cons of a relatively large high school like the one I attended versus a very small school like my friend goldie attended.

 

Some of the cool things about our school whan I went there:

 

- Two cafeterias. One served traditional plate lunches; the other served hamburgers, hot dogs, fries and shakes.

- Boys and girls basketball gyms on campus.

- Our school happened to have the vo-tech school for the whole county; kids from all over the county were bused in for those classes.

- Huge class choices. Our class catalog resembled a small college course catalog. I took stuff like Language and Human Behavior, Acting Arts, Mythology, Zoology. Physics, and so on. Kind of cool back in the early 1970s; very good preparation for college. Although I will say that the curriculum is probably more rigorous now, at least here in Mason County, than 35 or 40 years ago where I went to school.

- Any kind of club imaginable.

My school, Greenup Co., has changed alot since I left there 11 yrs. ago. some of it was good change, some not so good. an extensive renovation to the building was much needed, considering they built the school on a swamp. There is now tennis courts, a soccer field, and improvements to the baseball field.

 

The bad changes include having to have a Deputy at school at all times, and the problems with the administration, coaching staff, etc. is pretty much common knowledge on this site. I hope that all of those problems are soon to be behind us, so that all of the Muskie fans will be able to enjoy watching our teams play without the undercurrents that have held us back in recent years. If not, I guess there is always Orange and Black in my possible future....lol.

When I was a senior in high school I remember sneering about the underclassmen as though they weren't going to be able to live up to our standards. Of course, when I was an underclassmen the older kids were always viewed as being cool. I wonder if that condition plays a role in how we view our old schools.

I guess if I had stayed in the area, I would feel more of an affinity for the old alma mater. Moving to KY and having my two children graduate from the local school has resulted in much more allegiance to here rather than there.

That's understandable. It's also a problem that I am going to have. If thing's stay as they are now, I will have one child graduate from Greenup, one from Raceland, and 3 from Magoffin Co.

The only true differences between my day and today at CovCath, is the new building, and the lack of Brothers and Priest as teachers, but the same "With a Spirit, that will not Die" attitude is still alive and well.

 

Of course I think the real CovCath dress code should be put back into effect. Dress shoes, black socks, dress pants, dress shirt, tie and it needs to be tied tight to the neck. Today's student couldn't last a week being dressed like that each and every day for four years! :thumb::lol:

Since I graduated in 1965 Newport Catholic has just gotten better as Newport Central Catholic and it is continuing to improve each year . There is a building expansion in progress that will greatly enhance academic and athletic life there and eventually it seems that there will be a football stadium situated on the hill . GO BREDS!!!
