Artificial Turf at Mason Co.

Featured Replies

Seems to be the new trend.

It will be nice, I won't disagree with that. I just think they should take a look at the baseball field why they are on the topic. They refused to spend and extra $500 to put in a water opening behind the mound to water the field, it was too expensive.

Baseball don't usually make any money, like football and basketball.

I'd love to see it. I'd also love to see a regulation track at some point in time also at Mason County.

To add to the story just a little;

When the Maysville paper first reported that the school was considering this, there was a bit of backlash in "The Comment Line" section of the paper. This is a call-in line for people who don't have the intestinal fortitude to sign their name to a letter to the editor. The predominant tone was "gas costs too much, there's too much emphasis on sports", that kind of thing. I'm guessing that the Saturday or Monday editions of the L-I will have a couple of negative comments as well.

Again, I'd really like to see the turf at Mason County, but also not to the exclusion of improvements in other facilities. But then again, if it pays for itself and then some; maybe the athletic program will be flush with money and improvements to the baseball and track facilities will result.

As good as Mason County track has been in the past, I would've thought for sure that they had a track.

Artificial turf or not, Mason County has a nice spread of grass on their field, it looks very turf like anyway.

The turf looks good at the beginning of the season but it totally dead and brown at the end and any playoff games. Also, MCpapa, what is the track in the old jockey building. I thought it was really nice but is it not regulation? I have never seen it.

I think it's almost irresponsible to not install turf anymore. Our new school site is only 1 year old, and they just installed grass, which in the long run cost more $$$ and time. They originally didn't install sprinklers, and were watering it with yard sprinklers, but I saw they put underground in a few weeks back. It just seems all "penny wise, pound foolish" to me.

Not to mention schools with turf can hold more camps, state events, youth events, etc, making the school more profitable and attractive to future students, which in turn makes it more profitable. As a catholic school, we need to be profitable just to survive.

Anyway, congrats on the new field. I'll stop my rant.

Thank you 3wishes. Our turf guy, Chad Asbury does a great job keeping it going with football, soccer and band on it. But, when the weather gets wet, and we have to have activities on the field, it takes a toll and there is nothing anyone can do about it other than postpone or cancel events.

And, the bermuda was a dramatic improvement over the bluegrass/fescue surface we played on before 2003.

Most schools have a soccer field and football field. We don't. The turf will be much cheaper in the long run than building another facility the caliber of our football field.

I am proud of our BOE and administration. They want the best for our kids(soccer, band, pe, football, etc) and they are finding the most economical way to do it.

Miragesmack's rationale and logic is becoming the norm. When my dad started playing football at London HS back in the late 50's, I would guess there was ONE football team, no soccer, etc. Now, there are teams for both sports in grades K-12. Tough to have enough facilities to handle all of that.

Mason County's outdoor track is only 300 meters instead of the regulation 400. Although middle school meets are held there, you won't get high school events there. It's also a disadvantage in terms of training; especially relays.

The indoor facility is one-of-a-kind in Kentucky; Mason County is the only high school in the Commonwealth with such a facility. However, it is a 133-meter oval; and of course, events like pole vault and discus cannot be contested indoors.

All bermuda fields turn brown at the end of the year during playoffs. It is supposed to look like that. I always thought Danville had the best field in the state as far as grass goes and someone mentioned to me at a playoff game against LHC a couple years ago that it was dead and it was an awful field. In reality they still had the best field because they do a great job of thickening that bermuda up and allowing that grass to survive even when it is brown. I think they look best that time of year.

Is the turf in yet? Does anyone have a picture of this? This is just another example of how Coach Buchanan continues to make great strides with the football program, and this is just another big step in the right direction for the Royals.
