Final.

Darner singles to centerfield after Isler began the inning with a walk and was sacrificed over to second base.

WHAT A GAME FOLKS!!! This was an instant classic. Too bad someone had to lose.

I believe that you meant Maile (4 walks in the game) started the inning with a walk. He was then sacrificed over by Lafever. Darner hit the first pitch that he saw into centerfield.

Sorry about that. I was trying to get things updated really quickly and then tried to get stats to the media. My bad!

Very impressive showing by Dixie. Guess they had a little more after Nichols than most thought. While errors led to a lot of runs in this game, Smallwood seemed to have the Cov Cath hitters off balance for a lot of the game. Gutsy performance by Cov Cath though to rally late and never get rattled to get the runs across that they needed.

Congrats to Matt Nichols on a very impressive showing in the tourney (on the mound but especially at the plate!!!) and a great high school career. Good luck at Morehead!

Congrats as well to Cov Cath for advancing!

I'd like to thank Mark Wehry and the rest of the Cov Cath radio team for providing coverage for this game. Knowing Mark personally, it was a lot of fun to listen to him and the rest of the announcers along with their passion not only for baseball but for Cov Cath as well! Kudos to you!

First off I want to echo what statman said. It was a great game that unfortunately somebody had to lose.

Now the rest.

I think Dixie showed people that no matter how good Cov Cath is they can be played tight and possibly beat. To me it seemed Dixie would have won had it not been for a call by the home plate umpire that from the angle of many was a horrible call. But I will not blame the loss on that. Dixie just didn't get enough production from the people they needed to. Nichols did a heck of a job at the plate (6 for 6 tonight) but had 0 RBI's because people didn't get on in front of him. However, Dixie had a great season. Congrats to the players and coaches. There is nothing to hang your head about. You battled it out for 10 innings with the #1 team in the region. Best of luck to the seniors (Matt Nichols, Chase Johnson, Jeremy Cahill, and EJ Dettmer), you guys had great careers while wearing red. Stay Dixie Proud.

And congrats to Cov Cath. You guys battled it out and came up with a big hit when it was needed. Best of luck.

Am I correct that first base was open when Darner hit his game winner? Why pitch to him?

Am I also correct that the Dixie coach eschewed the sacrifice late in the game with a runner on 2nd and no outs?

Any thoughts as to his thought process on these?

.

The boxscore I saw this morning would make me question the quality of the game.

Walk Darner and pitch to Isler? Seems like pick your poison to me.

Darner's potential run is moot so why not at least set up a chance at a double play? Neither options are great considering they are 2 of the 3 best hitters on the team but you have to take the best option.
