CovCath outlasts Dixie

Despite five errors, only five hits, No. 1 team reaches final

BY RYAN ERNST | [email protected]

What the Ninth Region baseball tournament's first semifinal game lacked in artistry and execution, it more than made up for with drama and duration.

Covington Catholic outlasted Dixie Heights 6-5 in 10 innings at Champion Window Field to qualify for its second straight regional title game. CovCath has played for the championship in three of the last four years.

But this trip to the final wasn't easy.

The boxscore I saw this morning would make me question the quality of the game.

The 3 Dixie errors came from one kid who hasn't completely figured it out. I will accredit some of the CCH errors to the gusting wind and bright sun.

All I see is a game with 8 errors and with at least 6 of them not being caused by wind or sun. Maybe if we used the word "close" to describe the game then it would be more accurate.

Did anyone see the play at the plate in the B-6th? From were I was standing looked like he was out.

Gutsy game by both teams but very sloppy. Nichols!!!!--I don't need to say no more. Great season for Dixie. They really improved this season. Smallwood had CCH off balance all night. I was surprised he was pulled. Good luck to CovCath!

Did you see the picture in NKy.com? Tell me what you think after looking at it! Clearly, the catcher hadn't tagged him as of the picture being taken. Nutini without a doubt in my mind, is the best of any high school ball player at sliding around a tag!

I wasn't at the game so I have no clue on the play. However, that picture doesn't tell me safe or out. Nutini could've already been tagged and the photographer missed it, or as you stated, he hasn't tagged him yet.

If he was tagged it would have been about 5 frames earlier and in the middle of his chest. He looked out to me, but it was a bang-bang play either way...

Nice article by Ryan Ernst. He's done a great job covering NKY sports for a newspaper who doesn't really seem to be too concerned about this side of the river.

That picture doesn't prove anything because if you look close enough the plate is still 3 more feet down the line from Popham, Nutini's legs sliding more to the backstop than home, and his hand still 2 feet from the plate. Enough time for either Popham to tag him (if he didn't already) or enough time for Nutini to further avoid the tag and score. Who know? Only a video will prove it one way or the other.

Btw when is this game being replayed on ICN 6?

It will be on TBNK Insight 22, not ICN 6. I'll have an answer tomorrow on replay times...

Thanks GT. And were you there in the press box broadcasting the game?

Yup...

I wish I would have known it was you as I was up in the pressbox talking to statman and the rest of the crew.

Will you be there tonight?
