Back to CCH, everything I hear about the team is positive. The Colonels are big, strong, experienced, skilled, and hungry.

 

I also understand the 8th grade crystal ball is shining bright and the addition of 7th and 8th grade football is a step forward.

 

I won't go as far as lneck (lunch in hand) to say CCH is the favorite to win 5A but I think they are one of the favorites and the list is short. Off the top of my head Highlands and Owensboro are also at the top of the list.

 

Also, with another bear of a schedule, the uninformed football fan will have a hard time gaging the Colonels.

I don't think (at this point) that there is much spread between Highlands and CovCath, but I'm giving the Colonels the edge simply because they have a returning starter at qb and more importantly several returning O linemen. And you know how I feel about the importance of the O line. Highlands will only have four games under its belt when they play CovCath and I'm not sure that is enough time for Highlands inexperienced (but I think talented) O line to season up. Perhaps I'd feel different about who was the favorite if the two teams played at the end of the year, but they don't.

 

As for Oboro, in another thread talking about 5A in the west, it seems that while some are giving Oboro some love, some think BG will again win the western bracket. What are your thoughts on that Ru? Can Coach Wallace get to the pasta box 4 years in a row? (Sorry to thread jack).

If I'm Dave Brossart, Pat Van Sant rarely leaves the field in 2008. I'd use him from the wingback position, from the slot, from the wideout. Heck, I'd snap the ball to him occasionally and give him some options.

 

While they bring back all but one on the o-line, they lose a lot of skill players that played well towards the end of the season. Can they replace the two-headed Buckley/Furnish monster? They lose receivers as well (which is why Pat Van Sant should never leave the field).

 

I would also assume the offense will evolve in its 2nd year. I'm guessing Dave Brossart was not able to fully implement it last year. One key as to how they do early will be the issue of summer baseball vs football for Zach Isler. How many practices will he miss? Will it cause the passing game to start of slowly?

 

If Zach can improve his accuracy and be more consistent (true for all high school qbs) then the running game behind a strong line will be even more effective.

 

Can they beat Highlands? Tough call at this point. Speed vs Power. I'll give Highlands the slight nod simply because of their depth in each and every class.

If Isler is your starting QB and is playing summer baseball, I'm not sure I understand how that is going to work. I would think he could possibly miss a bunch of practices. That has to also be tuff on your receivers and running backs. You gotta be there to have that "team unity":D

Isler missed one or two summer workouts last year. Don't forget the year they won state Bleser played on the same summer team and missed some workouts, didn't seem to break "team unity".

My post was to contrast that year as compared to this upcoming year in regards to the lack of experience in the skill positions.

I don't blame anyone for playing several sports in high school but as a coach I would have a hard time with one of my players playing a club sport instead of attending school practices.

 

Since Highlands in the measuring stick for CCH, I wonder how many Highlands football players take part in club baseball instead of attending every football practice?
