The rich may pay more taxes, but percentage wise, they do not pay a greater part of their salary. The middle class and the poor pay substantially more out of their checks each week than a rich person and the effects hurt the poor/middle class more than it does a rich person as well.

Every politician in Washington is an elitist and needs to keep the poor oppressed. That is if they are Democrat or Republican. The major problem is that it take so much money to get elected these days that a true normal everyday person has no chance of getting elected to office. So the rich will do what is best to keep theirselves in power.

Relatively few of the nation's poorest citizens support Republicans. What evidence do you have that keeping people "oppressed" benefits Republican politicians? Most federal income taxpayers vote for Republicans and most non-taxpayers don' - so how does poverty help Republican politicians?

All the poor need is discilpine to get out of poverty. That's about as absurd as this entire thread.

Your thesis in the original post was that the Democrats need the poor to remain poor to sustain the party. Regardless of how it happened, a Democratic administration saw the economy go from the worst it has ever been to rather strong and saw the party strengthen as a result. So it would seem the Democrats don’t need the poor to be poor.

Some good points. I am beginning to think that conspiracy was a poor word choice to use. But what I was really trying to get across was 2 main points: 1) Democrats support policies that do not help the poor, but still retain the poor vote 2) At least my statement, while outrageous, is backed up by evidence. However, the simple statement by many that Bush wants the gas prices high because he profits is accepted by a lot of people

I agree, but conditions in those countries often improve after trade. But, again, the people often need assistance from the government to weather blips in the economy.Sometimes, I truly believe that all that people need from the government is: 1) no civil war 2) protection of private property rights 3) freedom of the media (to hold the government accountable for corruption). This, coupled with Foreign Direct Investment, is what spurs developing countries to grow.

For example. Warren Buffet complained that he paid a 17.7% tax rate on his $46 million of taxable income in 2006, while his employees paid an average 32.9% tax rate (his receptionist's tax rate was 30%).

 

Now is this not the same with all cases?

We've been thru this before. Three points:

 

1 Buffet's income was not salary, but investment income. If he didin't try intentionally to avoid taxes he would take the huge salary he deserves and would thus pay much more in taxes so he is very hypocritical on this point.

 

2 His employees must be well paid

 

3 His receptionist must be VERY well paid.

All of those folks quoting statistics to show how overtaxed high incomes are ignore the largest taxes paid by the poor and lower middle class. They ignore the social security and medicare taxes. These are currently 15.3 percent. When these taxes are included the situation changes quite a bit. As Mr. Buffet points out, a large part of his income is taxed as capital gain with a top rate of 15 percent. If you are in a 28 percent incremental bracket on earned income and make less than about $100,000, your top rate is 43.3 percent.

Hey, I'm all for doing away with the social security tax and saving everyone the 7.65 percent. It's the poor folks largest tax as they often pay no federal taxes at all.

Medicare is a flat tax and Social Security is a regressive. I personally believe that SS should be a flat tax.
