Pike County Bowl moved to Shelby Valley on Fri. night

Featured Replies

The Pike Bowl Committee headed by Pike Co. BOE member Virgil Osborne(from Shelby Valley) has decided that the Friday night game is now going to be played at Shelby Valley.

They have the artificial surface, where is it usually held at?

When the new Belfry High School was opened it was moved to there due to size of crowds.

What was once seen as one of the finest bowl games in the state has been corrupted by a BOE member and his political buddies. What a shame for two of the most tradition rich programs, Belfry and Pikeville, to have to put up with this kind of unwarranted action. I say give Shelby Valley their own bowl game and let Pikeville and Belfry go back to what they use to have, a doubleheader on saturday night, which is truly what the Pike County Bowl is all about.

You hit the nail on the head. The best thing that could happen to the Pike BOE is for the state to take them over again like at the end of the Reo Johns era.

I think you will see Belfry host there own bowl in the future if this continues, maybe even with Pikeville, as the rumor is ER will be getting Pikevilles spot if ER's BOE member wins his re-election bid...........

I understand your complaints, guys, but I don't think its that big of a deal. The bowl game expanded several years ago to include all Pike County teams and I have no problem with SV wanting to host. I think we need to swallow our wounded pride and strap them on and play, regardless of where the game is, just like any other week.

I think Belfry is better equipped to host the game, but so be it. Here is a chance to teach our kids that life isn't fair, we don't need any special treatment, we can play anywhere, etc. We'll just brush it off and go play the game.

I think Belfry's coaches really prefer to play on Friday night and would want to avoid a Saturday night game. This is just my opinion, but I think they would rather play at SV on Friday night than play anywhere else on Saturday night, including at home. (again, JMO)

I understand your point.

The Pike Co. Bowl was started to showcase the 2 best teams in Pike Co.

Shelby Valley is not a top 2 team.

I also think this is the beginning of a trend, to take as much away from Belfry as possible, ask around about the combining of the 59th and 60th in basketball.

As A fan who makes the 5 1/2 drive often to see these games I prefer seeing them played at Pike Central only because this was the first stadium I took a game in, in this area. I do think though that Belfry and Pikeville are the two best places to hose the games because their stadiums are that good.

I said this before and will once again reinforce my point:

I am fine with this change, but their needs to be one alteration. Let SV host Friday night's game, let Pikeville host Saturday night with Belfry playing that night as well. But let the Pike County teams playing Friday night split the gates/concession FROM THAT NIGHT ONLY, and then let Belfry/Pikeville split the Gates FROM THEIR NIGHT ONLY.

Do this and watch the other county teams beg for the system of the past couple years.

This is truly a case of looking a gift horse in the mouth. Anyone who has ever attended the PCB and watched the "undercard" matchups knows that it has long been the two elite Pike County programs who have carried the proceeds in this game that the other County schools gladly accept. I am all for SV trying to improve their program, and Coach Saunders thusfar has been making leaps and bounds, but unless SV was also hosting a basketball game that night at the 50 yard line, the attendance is going to be subpar.

The biggest problem with Pike Central is that the stadium you first watched the game isn't necessarily the same stadium that would be hosting now. The field is second rate, they no longer have visiting seating, and the PA system rarely works.

True statement. Only the teams playing in the game will be there on Friday night. No one from outside the county will drive to see the undercard games.

The Pike Bowl is finding itself on a slow descent.

This I did not know and agree it does not seem like the place I remember.

Please guys, you act like someone bulldozed a school over or something. To say that the State needs to take over the Pike Co. school system because of a change in the Pike Co. Bowl format, is silly to say the least. Sounds to me like we have a couple of disgruntled people who haven't gotten thier own agendas through.

Not the only reason I say that but here is some numbers for you about why the PCB should be at Belfry -

75, 73, 63-10, 2, 1, 2...ANYONE KNOW WHAT THESE NUMBERS STAND FOR.

75 IS THE TOTAL NUMBER OF GAMES THAT COULD BE POTENTIALLY PLAYED IN THE LAST 5 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL SEASONS.

73 IS THE NUMBER OF GAMES THE PIRATES HAVE PLAYED IN...

63-10 IS THE RECORD FOR BELFRY IN THOSE GAMES....

2 IS THE NUMBER OF STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THAT TIME...

1 IS FOR LAST YEARS RUNNER-UP...

AND 2 IS FOR THE NUMBER OF STATE-SEMIFINAL ROUNDS BELFRY ADVANCED TO IN 05 AND 06...

I THINK IT IS A SLAP IN THE FACE OF BELFRY FOOTBALL THAT THE FRIDAY NIGHT GAMES HAVE BEEN TAKEN AWAY THIS YEAR....

I HAVE HEARD NO GOOD EXPLANATION AND I THINK BELFRY FANS SHOULD PROTEST THIS...

ONE of THE BEST FOOTBALL PROGRAMS EAST OF LEXINGTON SHOULD NOT TAKE A BACKSEAT TO ANYONE...

WRITE LETTERS TO THE PAPERS, TO COMMUNITY TRUST BANK AND THE PCB COMMITTEE OR TO THE PIKE COUNTY BOARD...

IF YOU ARE SILENT THEN NO VOICES WILL BE HEARD....

LEAVE ME COMMENTS OR SEND ME MESSAGES ON WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT THIS...FEEL FREE TO REPOST THIS SO MANY MORE BELFRY FANS WILL KNOW ABOUT THIS....THANK YOU.

That is a message that is circulating the popular friends network and I have seen it posted by about 50 people.
