People in Zaire and East Timor are starving. Hungry and starving have different meanings, at least for me. I know of no starving Americans.

No, but of course I wasn't making a moral judgment, either. I believe that people who are blessed with "only" one small meal per day are better off than the vast majority of the world, and might consider adjusting their perspective.

Have you ever been to a big city? There are tons of homeless people in America right now that are probably pretty hungry all the time.

How many homeless people have you ever seen who look like they are starving? I have never seen any. Many of them are overweight in fact. I am sure that there are homeless people with eating disorders and others who are malnourished because of alcohol and drug addictions, but the issue is not a shortage of food. If it was, all homeless people would be skin and bones.

:lol: Yes, I was born in NYC and I family used to live there. I've been to quite a few large cities. I was watching some NBC where John Stossell was talking to some people waiting in line at a soup kitchen, and a lot of them had color TV. I am not saying abandon the poor, just that I don't think that people in America are starving.

 

Malnutrition may be a problem, but as discussed earlier, a lot of that is preventable.

Is it fair to compare fruit to complete meals? How many apples would you need to eat to equal the caloric value of the frozen dinner? I realize that making fresh produce part of your diet is good for you, but the chicken nuggets are more bang for your buck on the most basic reason for eating.

 

Banquet 1 lb 10 oz bag of nugs; 4.99. Not too cheap as far as chicken goes.

Maybe true, but not what I initially asked.

I know this is stereotypical, and I know there is plenty of exceptions to the rule. But if there is a correlation between poverty/obesity, it has to do with laziness if anything. By this I mean not just a laziness to exercising, but to food preparation as well.

During the work week, I never eat breakfast. Um, I'm not food insecure, I'm just not hungry in the morning.

This country doesn't let people starve. There are plenty of programs in place to keep that from happening.

Maybe we should have the starving children eat the obese ones. Kill two birds with one stone.

I have just started reading on the site, but so far, very interesting and eye opening. It seems that we all have an idea of what things are like for others, but we may not be as accurate as we think.
