Pat Buchanan: Signs point to U.S. strike against Iran

Featured Replies

Interesting article; Buchanan points out recent developments that suggest a U.S. military strike against Iran.

Petraeus points to war with Iran

If this comes to pass, I hope you like your gas expensive.

Worst possible thing we could do right now. Iran has done nothing to warrant us attacking them and they're not a pushover like Iraq. Also, unlike Iraq, they actually have the ability to have terrorists strike us at home. If we attack Iran they will retaliate and I could see the neo-cons in charge canceling elections in the wake of a "national tragedy". Unless they wait until November and a possible (unlikely) McCain victory. He would welcome more war.

A case can probably be made to conduct surgical strikes into Iran with U.S. aircraft and cruise missiles based on Iranian sponsorship of groups attacking U.S. personnel in Iraq. Does that mean the case is strong enough to make it worth the risk? Another question entirely.

The problem is (like with the Iraq invasion), the potential for unintended consequences is huge. Inflaming an even larger sector of the middle east is very risky. Oil would probably hit $150 a barrel. Who knows what actions other countries in the Middle East might take. Iranians might rally around Ahmadinejad instead of voting him out of office at the next election. Israel might become the target of missile attacks, which would further destabilize the region. Who knows, such an action could invite a situation where Iran becomes very friendly toward terrorist groups and openly provides sanctuary to train for attacks against the west. What then? An invasion and regime change in Iran?

What makes you think that a McCain victory in Nov. would be "unlikely"?

He keeps associating himself with failed policies and once the Dems get a candidate they'll rally behind he or she. McCain offers nothing but the same.

Fair enough, although, I would put his chances at atleast 50-50 right now, but that is just my opinion.

You need to put down the whatever your taking and step away for the computed. McCain welcoming war. Right. A man who suffered miserably because of war and a man with two sons in the military, I'm sure he wants more war. NOT. Cancelling elections. Yeah right. Seriously, you're kidding right or do you honestly believe that would happen? Please don't say you do. You have some credibility with me, but if you say you do think the Administration will cancel the election (as if they even had the power to do so), that credibility is lost.

And Buchanon's giant leap of thinking we may go to war because of Gen. P's comments would be laughable if it wasn't so absolutely stupid. Buchanon needs to be physically restrained. He's nuts.

Bush could enact Presidential Directive #51 or a slew of others that would give the president the right to declare marshall law in the event of a national emergency or terror attack. However, McCain has said he will "take care of Iran" and has promised more wars. McCain has also linked Al Qaeda and Iran several times, which there is no connection. Let's not forget his "bomb bomb Iran" song he sang to a bunch of supporters. I have no doubt in my mind that McCain will continue us on a path to war with Iran that the Bush/Cheney regime wants.

Isn't Directive #51 the one where the Storm Troopers turn on the Jedi?:D

Singing this song, makes you think war is a sure thing if McCain is elected. I have sang this songs tons of times since it first came out during the Carter Administration. I have yet to declare war on Iran.:D

Alot of scary things, and alot of people aren't recognizing congress has designated Iran's Quds(special forces) as terrorists. I've been dreading this. However at this point I just hope we bomb em before they can get organized.

I do not believe that Buchanan is right. There is no way that Democrats in Congress would support a strike on Iran during an election year, regardless of what the facts are. Pelosi, Reed, Obama, and Clinton have invested so much time and effort portraying the Bush administration as war mongers nothing short of a large scale attack on American soil is going to cause them to begin conducting themselves as statesmen.

If Iran develops nuclear weapons, they will be used and fingers will be pointed at those who could have taken action but declined.

You have just confirmed your spot in my "Far left wacko" category whose posts aren't worthy of consideration.
