Campaigning in Indianapolis for her mother, Chelsea Clinton had a quick retort when asked a question she had never had before. When a male student asked her if her mother's credibility had been hurt during the Monica Lewinsky scandal, Clinton quickly responded.

 

"Wow, you're the first person actually that's ever asked me that question, in the, maybe 70 college campuses that I've been to," Clinton bitterly said at Butler University. "And I don't think that's any of your business."

It would be difficult, as a child (son or daughter I mean) to embrace the fact that my father was unfaithful to my mother. But this is coming from someone who hates divorce.

Probably. But let's face it, we are dealing with the young lady whose parents went through that mess. It was not of her doing that her father committed adultery and I think her point was simple - it's a family matter now, not a public one.

 

Now if this guy had the ability (and or guts) to ask Bill the question in a Q & A I would say, "Go for it." To ask the daughter about the father's sins and the mother's dealing with those sins is out of bounds in my book. :thumb:

That question should be off limits, can someone ask Hilary herself that? Yes. But, to ask Chelsea is just uncalled for, as much as I can't stand the Clinton's I think that is completely unfair. That did not involve Chelsea at all that is a matter between Hillary and Bill.

First of all I don't see how her willingness to try and save a marriage after his adultery is a question that matters in the discussion of who should be President. What does Chelsea's opinion have to do with Hillary's ability to be president? I just don't see it HHS.

 

 

But if you think it's right, let's have a reporter ask Caroline Kennedy what does she think about Jackie Kennedy putting up with Jack's carousing? Is that fair? Come on.

 

I know a man who was a deacon. His wife cheated no him and together they worked it out. When he was being called to be a deacon do you think someone should have asked him, "Tell us how you can be a deacon when you let your wife cheat on you and you took her back?" Or worse what if someone asked one of the kids?

I wouldn't waste the gas to get across the street to see any of the Clintons......but that was a sorry question to ask of a daughter that was twelve years old when that happened, and certainly no fault of hers.

Second, "her willingness to try and save a marriage" smells more like trying to stay in the public eye because she's power hungry. If Monica was his first affair, I could buy your argument Hatz. But Bill has a long, long history of cheating on Hillary. I think your examples don't even come close to the example set by Bill and Hill.

 

These types of behaviors say a lot for a candidate. Others would be Rudy divorcing his wife who stood by him through his cancer and using police as his girlfiend's personal taxi service. Newt handing his wife their divorce papers while visiting her in the hospital. Edwards (allegedly) cheating on his dying wife (and getting the girlfriend pregnant). Huckabee pardoning a rapist (who went on to rape and kill 2 more women.) Romney railing against illegals while hiring illegal gardners. Obama's relationship with Rezko. McCain and the Keating 5. And so on and so on.

 

Sometimes its not about what you knew and did. Sometimes its about what you knew and didn't do. And why.

Not only would I not allow my daughter campaign for me, I wouldn't run for political office in order to protect my family. I prefer for my skeletons to stay neatly packed, thank you very much.

I also disagree with the writer's assesment that Chelsea responded bitterly. I feel she responded in an incredulous tone. And yes, she was firm when she said it was none of the question poser's business.

 

Franknly I agree with her. He and the editor of the paper at the school were interviewed this morning on GMA. Of course, the poser felt it was within the context of the forum to ask that question. The editior disagreed. He felt the question itself was not out of bounds, but that given the flow of the forum, and the topics being discussed, the question was inappropriate.

 

Someone wished in a thread that we could concetrate on the issues in an election. I think this is yet another example of the sensationalization of something completely unrelated to the issues, and frankly, diversionary in nature.

I think you mean Chelsey and I agree. When she comes out to campaign for her mother, she has to expect tough questions and that one while hard is a fair question.
