Barnum was a wise man indeed. However, I would not assume that Phineas would have considered the Clinton detractors as suckers. I think that he might have reserved that description for the Clintons' see-no-evil, hear-no-evil supporters.

 

Barnum spent a lot of time unmasking frauds in his day after becoming a devout Christian. Barnum was also a leading figure in the temperance movement and switched to the Republican Party in 1860.

 

My guess is that old man Barnum would have been much more comfortable in the company of the late Rev. Falwell than with either of the Clintons.
