How do the other 47 state tournements work?

Kinda find it hard to imagine that 47 states get it wrong and Kentucky, Delaware, and somwhere else are the only ones to get it right??? I think the setup needs to change and hopefully it will.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems that life in general is way more fun and enlightening when you're not always following the pack. I've heard it said by the wiser of men that if your going the ways of the majority, it can get pretty crowded, and that you're probably going the wrong way. Remember when Mom used to say "Just cause all the other kids are jumping off the bridge doesn't mean you have to"? Kentucky has an All 'A' classic that does a fine job representing the smaller schools, and those teams, if good enough, and quite often they are, can dance in the big dance too and no class divisions prevent them from doing so. I understand those who would like to see classes, but the Sweet 16 has a goose bump charm and tradition for many that class divisions would totally dissolve. Just ask basketball fans in Indiana. Just one state a way they used to have a mighty tradition that has gone the ways of the world only to now bore the heck of them, making them wish they had never changed. I've talked to folks from Indiana while attending the Sweet 16 in Lexington, who were there because they miss what they had. We could learn from them before we did something rash, like totally destroy a great tradition for the sake of being just like everybody else. :sleep:

Two more points:

 

1. I always wonder how many Sweet Sixteens someone has been to when they suggest its abolition - usually it's none.

 

2. There will never be any new chapters to Hoosiers - so in Indiana they had a system good enough to inspire a fantastic story and movie, and still managed to throw it away.

New Jersey doesn's have just the Tournament of Champions winner as their state champions. That is the overall winner....kind of like if we had a separate tournament among the 1A-6A state champions in football with the winner of THAT being the tournament of champions.

Marshall High School in Illinois won the 3A title. Reminds me of Arthur Agee and the movie "Hoop Dreams." I wonder if there were any Agees on that team??

I agree 100%. IMO, we need to have a state championship for each class. It unrealistic for the small public schools in the state to dream of a state title. The days of a player like Richie Farmer leading his small rural school to the title are over. It may happen once every 50 yrs or so but it would be nice to see more schools with a chance to win a state title. We've gotten to the point now where schools treat regional championship like state championships. I see both sides of the argument and I do think the Sweet 16 has some big Pro's in it's favorite but the one big Con outweighs those pro's for me, IMO. The Sweet 16 is great for us fans and it's an awesome experience for students and fans alike, as well the players but I'd like to have more of them have a chance to win a state title in their own class, in the class with schools of the same size!!
