No way .... This team was on life support against Elliott County. No knock on Elliott County, but they weren't as good as the 2003 Mason team.

 

 

The 03 team was on life support with St. Henry in the opening round of the Sweet 16 and no knock to the Crusaders. Same scenario this season against Elliott. Everything has to fall in place to win the championship and yes some breaks and luck have to fall as well. Lofton and the Royals were on the ropes all of that game, and St. Henrys key player went out of the tournament at the half with a injury. This could of had a different outcome and champion in 03 had that not happened.

I have read all these post, however everyone's forgetting two factors. These teams are great teams 03 & 08. I believe 04 might have been better than both teams. Now, the X factor on the 03 team is Lofton, he finds the basket, and the bench factor is something that hasn't been discussed in this thread. Sorry, county fans, but the 03 bench was tremendous, and rallied the Royals to the 03 state championship. The 08 bench isn't comparable to the 03 bench. I doubt there will be any disagreement in that statement. Across the board, I am proud to be a royal.

I think I would go with the 2003.

All you have to do is get physical with Darius,make him lose his composure and he will make silly fouls. Clark County did it last season(Jones) and Jarrod was always good at doing that his whole career against bigger,more athletic players

 

If that is all you had to do to stop Darius, how come teams still can't stop him??

A very good point. The '03 bench was very good. The '08 bench never got much of a chance. Benches don't win titles but they certainly do help!

I was thinking about this the other day. I think both teams are great teams. I would take the '03 team more times than not.

I'd say that you are wrong. In '03, the team got VERY VERY VERY lucky to beat St. Henry. St. Henry's front line averaged around 6'5".

Todd Vieth may have been 6'5'', but that's about it. Michael Schmidt was 6'3'' or 6'4''. Now what they were listed at may be another story, but no way did St. Henry's front line average 6'5''. I'm not sure that any team in recent memory has had a front line that big in the 9th.

I'm sure, besides Montgomery County's 2008 coaching staff, there's very few groups statewide that average 6-5 across the front line!!!

Not really fair to compare these 2 teams. BOTH teams did what they had to do to find a way to win. BOTH were great teams that had great players. Basketball has changed over the past 5 years and you can't really compare apples and oranges.

08 bench of Tolle, Hamm,Pawsat would make the difference.
