Morgan County High School is announcing that Jake Purnell will become the new HEAD FOOTBALL COACH of the Morgan County Cougars.

 

Purnell has spent the past 10 years as Head JV Coach, Varsity Offensive Coordinator and Offensive Line coach for Tabb High School in Yorktown, Virginia. Tabb H.S. has produced 2 NFL players including (Terry Kirby) and (Chris Slade)

 

Before coming to Tabb H.S. in 1998, he spent 4 seasons as an assistant varsity football coach at Towanda High School in Towanda, Pennsylvania. He also spent 4 seasons at Marion Catholic High School in Hometown, Pennsylvania as a varsity assistant football coach.

Wow.....I wonder why he wants to move to Kentucky? Where is the connection? Or maybe does he just want a challenge and new scenery? Good luck to the new head guy and the Cougars!

Glad to see this one finally get resolved. Hate to see a school wait too long before making a decision. I don't know what KY connection the new coach has, but it sounds like a case of a coach that has been in the assistant role finally getting a break into being a head. Congratulations Coach!!! Make the best of it and keep the rest of our dreams alive of one day wearing the big head set.

Just got a little background info. Is the new guy, Purnell, a double wing coach? I heard from a reliable source that the Morgan county middle school had success with the double wing, and was looking for a double wing coach to continue it at the high school level. I heard they talked some with Estill county and seemed very interested in their style.

There were no specifics in terms of finding a new coach based on what the middle school ran...that really had no bearing, the search was for the best football coach period. As in most searches, certain coaches out there were of interest and I know there is a deep respect from Morgan Co. for Estill's head coach and what he has done at Estill. Coach Purnell will not run the double wing, but there are similar characteristics and offensive philosophies that are fitting for the type of athletes here. He has many years experience and worked under some outstanding coaches, one of which was Charlie Hovis at Tabb H.S., a legendary coach who has produced outstanding talent and teams at that school. Coach Purnell is highly recommended, proven to have made a difference at his school and has an extremely high football I.Q. His disciplined approach will help Morgan Co. H.S. in many ways on and off the field. Kentucky coaches will enjoy getting to know him. Outstanding personality and quick wit humor. He spent his spring break here at Morgan Co. in the weight room and getting to know the kids.

 

Hopefully there will be continued cohesion among our football programs, and Morgan looks forward to beginning the Jake Purnell era.

Yorktown is great but we wanted a rural setting to raise the kids. Morgan County fits the bill perfectly.
