Ironlung Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Corey Sorrell has been named the 9th Region POY by the KABC. He will receive his award this week at Rupp Arena. This was announced at the HC basketball banquet.

How does Henderson get the NKAC 9th region POY (voted on by COACHES who have actually seen him) but yet Sorrell got this award?
Mack The Knife Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches.
Your Daddy Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 The KABC is the Kentucky Associaiton of Basketball Coaches. The votes for each region's coach and player of the year awards are made by coaches from each region. So only 9th region coaches voted for the 9th region award.

I sitll don't understand how Sorrell got it then. Henderson won the NKCA 9th region player of the year award which is voted on by the coaches in the 9th region as well.
cshs81 Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Congrats to Cory Sorrell. Not an easy choice with so many talented seniors in the 08 class.
joejoe08 Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Sounds like the coaches were spreading the wealth a little. Congrats to Sorrell on a great year.
Henry Steele Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 I sitll don't understand how Sorrell got it then. Henderson won the NKCA 9th region player of the year award which is voted on by the coaches in the 9th region as well. As I understood it in a prior discussion, the NKCA is an outgrowth of the old NKAC conference, and still includes the "old" Ninth Region schools, like Bishop Brossart, Simon Kenton and Scott. If it was a very close vote amongst the NKCA coaches, and those that are NKCA coaches voted for Arrez, I can understand the different results. I don't agree with them, but I can understand them. Corey had a great year and put up numbers worthy of a POY, and he is deserving of the award and should be congratulated. I happen to think that Arrez Henderson is more deserving, given the success that he led his team to, but I can agree to disagree on that point. Congratulations to both Arrez and Corey, and good luck.

I don't want to argue about the thing at all, they're both awesome...just saying that if one look's primarily at stats....Corey's numbers are just amazing...
Mack The Knife Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 There has been different results in the 8th Region regarding POY awards in the past few seasons. I also think the KABC POY has to be awarded to a senior.Someone correct me if I am wrong.
airjordan23 Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Cory Sorrell is very good, but he is not the player of the year. I don't understand how you can have Arrez Henderson as one player of the year and Sorrell as another.
Big Slick Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 KABC POY awards go to seniors only, also there is some type of rule about if a school is in good standing. I know they can't vote, not for sure about win awards if not in good standing.

I don't want to take away from Sorrell getting this award, as I've said all year that he was the best OFFENSIVE player in the 9th. I just don't see how they don't give it to Henderson considering the following: 1) NKCA 9th region POY 2) Division I Defensive POY 3) Division I Conference POY 4) Division I All Star 5) 35th Disitrict MVP 6) 9th region MVP Those are some tough things to overlook when it comes to being honored at Rupp. Congrats to Sorrell though.

Henderson won the NKCA 9th region player of the year award which is voted on by the coaches in the 9th region as well. Perhaps there was a time lag between the two votes and their opinions changed. Not sure what else would cause it if it was the same group of coaches.
