Sweet 16 a Small School Tourny???

I was looking at a line up of the schools in the sweet 16 and wondered if Owensboro is the largest school in the tournament this year??? If so that is surprising. Even if they aren't, I can't imagine there being too many more schools bigger in this tournament. With I believe someone said 5 All A teams also in the tourny along with many mid sized schools, what is up with bigger schools not being as competitive for the state tournament?? I'm pretty sure this concept has been mentioned in the past state tournys, but just looking at this years I'm just surprised, is there even a 6A school(football wise) in the tournament?

Shelby Co. is actually the largest school, with about 1,700 students. Greenwood is next, with about 1,600. Both are 6A. There are a few other schools larger than O'boro (1,100 students).

 

But this is the most "All A" schools I can recall making it. Could've been six had Gallatin Co. held on against Shelby.

Which is all the proof anyone could need that the Sweet 16 is still very much a magical tournament where small schools can still compete in it, and that there is no need to spoil this magic with class divisions. The All 'A' Classic should be enough to keep everybody happy to avoid ruining a good thing. If the tournament were to no longer welcome the likes of a 75 student enrollment school like June Buchanan, then I don't think I'd be nearly as interested in it as I am now. The Sweet 16 is the greatest show in hoops. Why would anyone ever want to mess with that. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. :thumb:

Small schools in certain regions can win. Small schools can't win in the 3rd Region. They can't win in the Louisville regions. No public small school will win the 11th. They rarely win the 1st region. They don't win in the 9th Region.

 

Small schools fare well in regions where there are very few (if any) private schools and no major metro areas such as the 5th, 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th. Those are the regions that usually produce your small school entries.

They don't win in the 9th Region.

 

99/00- Newcath

02/03- St Henry

 

Every couple years an all A school will win the 9th. Newcath is a threat every year. They were the only team in nky to beat Holmes this year.

 

The reason we haven't seen a small school recently from the 9th is because of the talent Holmes and CCH have had. But with all the talent Holmes has had in the past 4 years, Newcath holds the most wins against Holmes in nky outside of Covcath.

The reason there aren't many big schools is because most of the big schools play in the same regions and only one team makes it out of each region.

 

As WestKy pointed out.

True. You could probably win the 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th regions with the 5th best team in the 6th, 7th, and 11th regions.

Bummer, guess I need to know where to do my research before I start a thread. However, I figured one school would be bigger than Owensboro but I wasn't aware of the size of Greenwood and South Laurel. Still, it brings a question as to why bigger schools don't seem to be as dominant when it comes to both football and basketball. Male might be the best big school at both sports.
