Can a Professional Team Produce A Championship Product with a Low Budget?

Featured Replies

I think baseball is the sport that should be looked at to find out whether or not a small market team can produce a winner, all the other sports have salary caps.

The answer is yes, but its so difficult.

Look at the Marlins a few years back. They did it. Money does not equal success, talent and great coaching equals success.

I think if you can build through the draft and keep a bulk of your team under their original rookie contracts, you can keep your costs low. If you go out and compete in the overpriced FA market, not possible...

So if this chart is correct, isn't half the NFL teams over the salary cap?

Football and basketball have salary caps, but they are really non issues. The point that teams are really afraid of is the Luxury Tax, which is present in all 3 sports.

Offcourse havent you seen the movie Major League?

If the Giants hadn't drafted so well last year, they would not have won the Super Bowl.

They're pass rush had a lot to do with it as well.

Baseball is the toughest IMO. The Twins are solid year in year out it seems like but it's pretty tough IMO.

If you can have draft classes like the Giants did this year, then yes, you can win cheap.

Back about 15 years ago, the Indians did something similar. Locked up all their young talent (some homegrown, others not) like Thome, Baerga, Visquel, Lofton, etc. for the longterm. They didn't end up winning it all, but played in a couple of World Series and were legit contenders for quite awhile with that bunch.

By the way, since "Major Leagues" was brought up...did anybody else thing that the Kenny Lofton - Willie Mays Hayes likeness was too close for coincidence at the time?

Yes, Cleveland did it starting with Manny and then as you said, those like Thome, Baerga, Vizquel and Lofton and are doing it now with Pronk, CC, and Grady.

However, look what else happened, we lose Belle, Thome, Manny and the like to free agency because as a small market, we couldn't compete. It sucked.
