Can a Professional Team Produce A Championship Product with a Low Budget?

Featured Replies

Back about 15 years ago, the Indians did something similar. Locked up all their young talent (some homegrown, others not) like Thome, Baerga, Visquel, Lofton, etc. for the longterm. They didn't end up winning it all, but played in a couple of World Series and were legit contenders for quite awhile with that bunch.

By the way, since "Major Leagues" was brought up...did anybody else thing that the Kenny Lofton - Willie Mays Hayes likeness was too close for coincidence at the time?

Which Willie Mays Hayes?

Omar Epps? Or Wesley Snipes?

That is pretty crazy. The first movie was made in '89 though I believe. Kenny was still in Houston's farm system at that time. John Hart must have watched the movie and said "I want a player like that!"

The Bengals and Reds certainly haven't.

It is easier in football. A couple of highly-paid superstars may make you good, but it really takes a lot more than just the starting lineup in this team sport to vault you to the top. For instance, backup defensive lineman are a treasured commodity.

Not the same in baseball. Though baseball is a team sport, a dominant pitcher or two, or a dominant top part of the batting order, may be enough to send you all the way. Spend a lot of money on the starting nine and you might be a World Series team.

The Yankees have shown you can't buy championships. Before they started trying to buy everyone they were winning. Since 2000 they have not won a World Series. 2001 Started the trend by signing Jason Giambi to that big contract.

I disagree.. The Yanks went and got

Abreu

Damon

A-Rod

Giambi

They have

Matsui

Posada

Jeter

Melky

Cano

And they still haven't won a Championship with any of those new players.

What about Boston though? They spend just like the Yanks and have won two of the last four World Series.

They have a high payroll but they spend their money wisely... The Yankees just try and go get whoever had a good year before. Such as this.. When the Braves had Jaret Wright he done pretty well, the next year the yankees sign him and he's horrible. Same for Carl Pavano, Randy Johnson and Kevin Brown. The yankees can't manage money and they also OVERSPEND!!! that luxury tax is crazy!

What I'm saying is, the Sox throw cash around just as much as the Yanks do and buy their championships as well

They definitely do.

The Yankees are getting much better about spending their money more wisely.

You cannot compare baseball and the NFL.

In baseball, I say that a small-market team cannot regularly compete. Yes, there are exceptions but it will not happen on a regular basis. The Bosox payroll is huge. The Cards were in the upper half of payroll. The Yanks obviously are.

Until baseball adopts a salary cap, the high-paying teams will dominate the sport.

I wouldn't say they throw around AS MUCH as the Yanks...close, but probably not even.
