9th Region Officials

Featured Replies

Although the 16th region officials tend to do a poor job, I thought last nights officiating in the Elliott Co./Rose Hill game was some of the worst I have seen in a long time. Coming from an unbiased opinion, I couldnt believe some of the calls that were made and some that were not made. There was one trip down the floor where J. Ferguson got a rebound and attempted to put the ball back in and got absolutely murdered and nothing was called. When Rose Hill took the ball back down the floor, Chad Jackson pulled up to shoot a three, made the basket, got hit (barely), and got a foul called. I dont understand how the officials could call the fould on Rose Hills end and not make the call at Elliott Co's end. This is just one example of the many poor calls made last night. I dont know if I would say the officiating decided the outcome of the game, but it was some of the most inconsistent officiating from a crew I've ever seen. (Again, Im from neither of these areas, just there to watch a good game, and it was, but thought I would let my opinion be known)

You can have the 9th back anytime you want.

We'll gladly take them back. The 16th officials have not impressed me at all.

Do the refs from each region generally work with each other during the season, or are the regionals a hodge-podge of refs from that particular region? I noticed in the first round of the 9th, that the officials never really appeared to be on the same page.

In the 16th, officials work with different officials each night. It would be nice if they could keep a group of officials together for the season and they travel to different places around the region. That way, officials could become very familiar with each other.

I personally think the 16th has done a decent job except for last night in the Holmes/Dixie game.

There was a play where Henderson of Holmes (6') scored against Mace of Dixie (6'8) and MAce got frustrated and pushed Henderson after the play heading to the bench on a timeout, but yet they called Henderson for the technical and then the very next play Holmes got a steal and dunk and the Holmes player gave the ball to the opposing team's player and the ref calls a ball warning?

Couldn't give Coach Mayes that whistle because nothing would be called as it is all he can do trying to coach his team!

In other threads you have said he does no coaching at all! So he would have plenty of time to officiate the game if that is the case.

Exactly, he does no coaching so why would I think he would take the effort to blow his whistle to make any calls!

What officials 9th region officials have been sent to do the 16th games?

Murdered? Wow, that is strong. Not seeing the call, I can't comment on the validity of foul/non-foul. Officiating is all about angles. From your angle, it looked like a foul underneath. However you were probably 45 foot away looking through moving players. Many times the players fall to the ground because they are off balance. This player jumped twice within 3 seconds so he/she might of been off balance. In this case of the made basket, you admit the player got hit. Protection of the airborne shooter is key. So by your own admission, they got one right. Referees get on the average grading get about 97 % of the calls right. They do a great job but not every call makes fans, players, and coaches happy.

Some of the 9th region refs haven't been that good.

I hate to see a game where the ref makes calls that changes a games outcome. Like calling touch fouls on a big guy down low. These kids play hard all year and then the ref can take it all away with his whistle.

Tonite was kind of ugly

I personally think the 9th region guys are doing fine down here! One of the best in the business Charlie Chappie is having a great tourney!!

GoRadio I almost always agree with you on your post. But this time I will have to disagree. I thought that they confused the players by letting them bang around in the paint and under the basket but then call a touch foul. This just didn't happen in the Elliott/Rose Hill game but also the Ashland/East Carter game.

Great logic. I always love the here is the whistle coming from the incompetent.

Maybe we can just expect that the people who seek and agree do the job actually perform at a level worthy of their pay.

Oh I think that is EXACTLY what you are getting here, you just choose not to see it. If you want perfect officiating, or guys that have the ability to perfect their craft year round, then pay them like the guys that are able to do so. Surely you realize that this isn't a "job" for 99% of these guys, it is a hobby.

Not to mention if they get REALLY good, guess what, they aren't sticking around to call high school basketball games. So you are perpetually training new guys or guys that, in most cases, aren't able to do college games for one reason or another.

So yeah, I think your getting EXACTLY what you are paying for.....:D

As a player, I was always taught to adjust to how the game was being called, as no two humans have the same set of eyes and they all see things differently. Of course my coach always said to "never blame the refs for a loss", so I guess I come from a different breed.
