I have never been a proponent of all tournament teams anyway...seems to me that they cause more problems within each team. The benefit is individual recognition for players...but this is a team sport and it is the TEAM that suffers from potential turmoil from within.

I think a con of the all-tournament team is that the coach picks it. This is a bad thing, because like you said it could make others unhappy on the team, but really that doesn't matter as much, as long as the deserving players get it. The thing that gets me, is that the coach may give it to someone who's played well all season, but may have struggled in the tournament, but because they are usually good, they'll get the all-tournament team selection. It's about who performs the best in the TOURNAMENT, and it's not always given out that way.

 

Also, it may be given to a senior who didn't play well at all over a sophomore for example, who had an outstanding regional tournament.

 

I think this can be solved by having like you said, media members in attendance select players off each team for the all-tournament team.

As a member of the media, we have done this before in the district tourney, never the region. But I will personally not do this. The last time we chose the All-Tourney team during district play, parents, coaches, principals, etc. went nuts. Because we chose an All TOURNAMENT team and not an All SEASON team. There were those who had a great season who didn't do squat in the tourney and we did not choose them. It is a hard job and they should probably pay a panel of experts to choose them, if they are going to have one at all. Why should I go out on a limb and choose an all-tourney team just to be ridiculed by a disgruntled parent??

That's the point I was trying to make. The players who play best in the tournament should make the all-tournament team, not the players who had an excellent season, but didn't seem to offer much in the tournament. All too often it happens that those who had a great season will make the all-tournament team all the time, while those who actually contributed a lot during the tournament will get left out. There should be someone other than the coaches that chooses the all-tournament team.

This is also a good point/idea. It takes away from the idea of the TEAM sport as you stated, and rewards individuals for their performances, which isn't a bad thing, but it seems to refer that there is an I in team, and we all know there isn't.

But that's what we're talking about. Sometimes the players don't really deserve it, but get it anyway because they had a great season, and not necessarily a great tournament. I don't have a problem with it if someone other than the coaches or someone from the teams pick the all-tournament team.

Another reason I like All-Tournament Teams is that this award looks good on the resume of a player who wants to play at the next level. Remember, this award does not always go to the high scorer. Leadership, assists, rebounds, defense and overall performance are factors in the selection.

This should be how they do it now, instead of the coaches picking. Most of the time, though, the high scorers are the ones who make it, even though it's not based strictly on that.

All-Tournament team is a great idea because a player that may not be on a such talented team but plays well may not be capable of going all the way. This gives them the self recognition they deserve. I know its a team sport but not every talented individual can play a regional competitive team. Some have overachieved just by reaching regionals.

Never-ever should an all tournament team be picked by a coach or anyone associated with that school. This is when politics/favorites become involved and nothing good comes out of it. It not always easy to pick the winner of this award because sometime 2 players have a similiar good game but neither one stands out more than the other. This is when feelings get hurt and everything starts going down hill.

I've been against all -tourney teams for years. I hate the idea of coaches picking the team. I also hate the idea of mandating a certain number of players selected from each team. Even when these methods are not used I still dislike these awards. Individual awards are usually given for individual statistics. When players (and parents) focus on statistics there are always going to be problems. Why do we need these awards? The players should be playing to win as a team, and for no other reason.

 

As for resume' builiding, if a player is college material then sending out video and other information to colleges can achieve the same purpose.

I have to agree with the majority about the coach NOT picking player(s) from their team for all-tournament. Although I do think there should be an all-tournament team due to the fact that you may have a player who is not your star player but plays well in the tournament and gets recognized when normally she has had to take a back seat to the star or stars on the team. As far as how they are chosen? I don't have a slam-dunk on that one but maybe a selected few are chosen to watch all the games and then make the decision on the all-tournament team. There is no reason to let others know who is on the committee but just that there is one. And for those who get upset - get over with it - that's the way life is - you don't always get what you want and life is inherently unfair at times.

I agree. A coach may choose based the season as a whole and not the tournament. A coach may also choose based on emotions (a players senior year) or even favorites.
