How does everyone feel about having teammates choose the awards for the banquet?

 

I feel the coaching staff should choose these awards based on player stats.

I have no problem with players IN SECRET BALLOT choosing certain awards cause it best represents the team.

 

For example, a leadership award. I, as a coach, may feel a person exemplified leadership when in reality the players couldn't stand them and wouldn't follow them anywhere.

That is a good point! What are your thoughts about best defensive award, most improved, most hustle - awards of that nature?

I let them vote.

 

I choose and parents get upset.

They get upset with them and I could say, the team chose those awards. Coaches got a vote in the awards but I don't ever recall a situation in which I could not agree with the team's selection.

I think you should do away with all individual honors because the last time I watched, basketball is a TEAM sport...

 

As is football, baseball, etc. So I guess we should do away with tournament MVP's because no ONE player made the difference. There are times when you have multiple players step up equally but generally it is easy to pick out who were the key performers.

 

As for players who score the points getting the awards, last time I checked you have to have points to win the game and that does take some skill. Now I realize that someone had to get them the ball, etc but without scoring a basket, you will lose. Offensive players who excel always get more recognition in any sport.

 

Not everyone gets recognition in a game even though everyone contributes something in every game- except with Upward where every player gets a star.

 

These awards are subjective no matter who you put in charge of them- someone will always feel slighted.

I guess my concern is with the younger players that out-play and out-score the older girls on the team, but they will not receive an award for their hard work.

 

If you have stats to back your decision then parents should not have anything to say.

Except when their stats from the stands does not match the stats that the team has.

Those are the stats in which I was referring to.

Back to the original thread...I think ideally, having someone that's unbiased (and unrelated) to the teams and players would be best. I guess in this instance, the media probably comes as close to this as we might get.

 

However, let me toss this one out there...instead of coaches nominating players from their OWN teams...they can only vote for players on OTHER teams. Can't tell you how many times I've heard a coach say "Man, this kid just killed us" and it wasn't always the marquee player or top scorer. And since most coaches are there at the tournaments, win or lose, you'd have somebody that'd likely see all of the games/players.

 

The only drawback that I can see is that if there's a double-header, the coaches from the second game might be in the locker room getting their team ready for play when it's crunch time in the opening game. A clutch, winning shot might be easily missed.

 

Just another alternative.

I think this is a good idea...I think if coaches vote they should be able to vote for any player on any team but their own, that way there are no emotions involved.
