Well, if you measure standard of living in Real GDP per Capita, then the US is above every country in the world except for Luxembourg and Norway. Maybe I shouldn't give my opinion.:thumb: GDP doesn't always reflect the "standard of living" you have personal income, unemployment, debt per family, etc. You can have 1,000 companies making tons of money and the country their in not have a very high standard of living. I just hate that argument b/c it sounds like people in Europe and the rest of the industrialized world are living in squalor when it's not the case. French folks have lower debt per family than Americans, and every European I've met seems to be a little less stressed about life. When you don't have to worry about paying back huge student loans and don't have to worry about being one big injury/illness from bankruptcy I guess you don't fret much.

Unemployment in the US is around 5.1%. In Germany, it is 8.5%, actually towards the bottom (as in a little better) then most of Europe. However, once you are unemployed, it is very difficult to find another job in Germany because since government regulations make it very difficult to fire workers, companies are reluctant to hire new ones. In terms of Gross National Income, US is at 41,567 while Germany is at 29,853. In terms of Net National Income, US is 36,443 while Germany is 25,414. I couldn't find the numbers of Personal Debt that you are talking about. I would very much like to see those. I will admit that the CPI is growing at a slower rate in Germany then the US, but both are below the world average. With all due respect, the various concerns that you have seem like the typical worries that are expressed by the mass media. I have seen a lot of your posts and have ruled that out because you seem to be a very intelligent individual. I agree that Europeans aren't living in squalor although I have never heard that claim before. What I am trying to say alludes to my earlier point- I don't understand how liberals think. Believe me, the US has some issues that need to be worked out- the death penalty, the education system, and hopefully the eventual eradication of welfare, if possible, among other things. But I believe that a long reign of higher taxes will hurt this country dramatically.

It's the life I've lead to this point; the life that's happend to my parents and family; the life that's happened to my grandparents and extended family. I don't need a book to tell me why I have the belief I hold. I don't need a book to tell me what I see around me, what I know of the lives of people around me. I also don't need a book or another person to label me or others like me.
