February 19, 200818 yr I've read several people's opinions on this board about the differences between Islam and Christianity. Lots of people had opinions, but much of what I read was just that... opinion. If I could, I'd like to start a fact-based discussion about the in's and out's of the religion, and it's relationship throughout history with Christianity. We can keep the discussion pretty open, as long as we bring facts backed by hard evidence. The reason I bring this up is because I am currently in a Middle Eastern history class, and from what i've learned so far about the actual history of Islam they seemed far more accepting of other religions than anyone in Europe at the time of the founding of their faith. I've heard alot of people call Islam a faith based in violence, but I have a hard time really beleiving that. Everyone just tell me what you think, and again try and bring some evidence. Thanks
February 19, 200818 yr From what I learned way back when in a Church History class was that most of the problems between Islam and Christianity stem from the Crusades, where Christians tortured Muslims and committed many acts of cruelty.

February 19, 200818 yr Islam is actually based in peace, and civil rights. But like all religions it has been perverted by extremiests.
February 19, 200818 yr As far as faiths based in violence. More people have been killed in the name of god than for any other reason. Not saying Christianity is based on killing. But that don't change the fact.
February 19, 200818 yr From what I learned way back when in a Church History class was that most of the problems between Islam and Christianity stem from the Crusades, where Christians tortured Muslims and committed many acts of cruelty. When I was in Medieval Culture class in college I did a term paper on the Crusades. While there was of course tensions between Muslims and others it wasn't nearly as bad until after Christians invaded the Holy Land and killed countless innocent Jews, Muslims, and non-Catholic Christians. Muslims actually had freedom of religion of sorts in many places. The deal was convert to Islam or pay taxes. Many Jews and Christians lived in relative peace with Muslims. If it weren't for Muslims, Europe would have remained in the Dark Ages a lot longer since Islamic peoples found no problems studying science, and biology while still practicing their faith.
February 19, 200818 yr Islam is actually based in peace, and civil rights. But like all religions it has been perverted by extremiests. Do you know anything about Mohammed and how he spread Islam? Do you know anything about his personal life? As far as faiths based in violence. More people have been killed in the name of god than for any other reason. Not saying Christianity is based on killing. But that don't change the fact. There's a difference between being created through violence and having violence in your history. So called Christians have been wrong many times in the past including the Crusades and the Inquisition. But that's not the origin of Christianity. Its just those place where it left the tracks.
February 19, 200818 yr I refuse to feel guilty about the crusades. I was only a very young child at the time and had nothing to do with it.

February 19, 200818 yr Maybe we shouldn't feel guilt about it because we weren't around and didn't make the decisions time and time again a groups have wronged other groups. Unfortunately those groups never look at the ones who wronged them the same again.

February 19, 200818 yr I heard it put like this one time ... islam .... Giving your son's life's for the faith. Christianity ... God giving his SON for us ... or something like that. I thought it was pretty cool.
