I would be curious to know if the parts of the state with the highest unemployment is getting their share of casinos? Or if in the plan, simply the rich are getting richer in terms of job opportunities.

If you really want to impress me, put one in Letcher County or Jackson. You'll need to build a better road. Hotels/motels will be required since you'll be in the middle of nowhere and can't easily gamble all day and then drive home. While we're at it, we can promote some elk tours, perhaps some all day ATV rentals, maybe a little rafting and sightseeing.

 

In reality, I'm pretty sure it'll goes along the interstate.

I thought 98 and RTS made equally enlightening comments. It would really be helpfull if everyone who is so sure would elaborate a bit.

The population base will be much closer to these casinos than those in Indiana.

The Cincinnati metro population base will be closer to these casinos. That's why they know our area will support two casinos.

Did you argue that Toyota should have went to a high unemployment region? Or do you think a business should be located where it logistically has the best chance to succeed?

However, I'm old school enough to operate under the motto that whatever seems too good to be true usually is. I've lived in two states at the time the lottery was born and heard the myriad promises that never came true. I trust nothing that came to life as a campaign promise. You already have a somewhat suspicious activity going on in the NKY area envolving a prospective real estate deal. I also suspect there are many who just want easy access to gambling and an opportunity to show up the so called religious right.

Yes. Not that London/Corbin couldn't use the jobs, of course they could, but they are far from the bottom of the list.

The biggest problem for EKY in attracting business is the road system and availibility. So road availibility is one of the biggest concerns of a business and where they are locating. If I am looking at it from a business' perspective, I would locate ther.

 

I think I was 12 or 13 when Toyota came about. I didn't care where it went.

 

But from a government's perspective that is trying to sell as one of the positives is job creation, you have a different view. Does Lousiville need the job creation as much as Pikeville? Does NKY need it as much as Harlan? If you are going to try and sell it on the creation of badly needed jobs, shouldn't it be in the areas that badly need the jobs?

 

That is why I asked what were the unemployment rates. I don't know and was inquiring whether jobs were going to be created in areas that need jobs created.

If it passes, it will be very interesting to see whether Laurel or Whitley County gets the casino in my area. On one hand you have Senate President David Williams who has close ties to the Corbin area(Whitley)that may hold the power necessary to get it passed in the Senate. On the other hand, there is a group that has been positioning themselves to get the nod for the London-Laurel Co. area that donated boatloads of money to the Governor's election.....................politics at work at it's best.

 

I think that they will put one at the seed of Whitley Co. If it passes...

I think while the jobs will be appreciated in those areas, the jobs being created is not necessarily attacking KY's unemployment issue at the places that are in desperate need for jobs.

If the purpose of locating one in SEKY is to attract money from Tennessee and not just to dole out polictical favors or to see that this area gets to pay their share of the voluntary tax, then I would think it would be best located near the border in Williamsburg (11 miles) although Corbin (25 miles) nor London (40+miles) would not be that much of a stretch. All three are located along I-75.

 

Another thought would be Middlesboro, long a shopping destination for NE Tennesseans and SW Virginians. Here one could also take advantage of a national park (Cumberland Gap) and be close enough to Knox County that even I may be able to make a buck.

 

Again, show me the plan and the studies before you go any further.

It really is that easy. I'm not going to even act like I know the reasons that will be great for the state, but I do know this: I'm going to the Belterra Saturday night to see Miranda Lambert and I have a room. I live in KY and probably spend the night at least once a month at the Belterra. I gamble enough money there that I don't have to pay for my tickets or my rooms. I pay every bill I have on time, but I love to gamble. It may be selfish but I would love to live 10 minutes from this type of place compared to 45 minutes. As others have mentioned people who are addicted to gambling to the point that they blow all of their money will find a way to blow all of their money anyway. Why as a state would we not want my money and all of the other people just like me to stay in the state? That doesn't even begin to mention all of the people who sit in my section at teh Belterra every concert I go to. I would be willing to bet that not even 20% of those people are from Indiana.
