Deer in FT. Thomas...

Has the "open season" had an effect on the population? I know I don't see as many as before. What say you?

I still see quite a few. Not a noticeable difference for me.

I've noticed a big drop in the number you see in the park. Haven't had as many strolling past here either.

I hadn't seen any since the hunt started until the other night there were 3 in the yard. About 9 fewer than what use to hang in our yard every night.

They must be all gathering by me because I see the same 4 every night around the same time. Buck and three does. As well as a few random ones here and there. It is about the same for me not a noticeable increase or decrease.

Oh no, not this again. But to answer your question, I've not seen as many in the woods behind our house. Although the rubs on the trees are worse than ever before.

Henry, is that LN on your atavar? he's quite a skier.:thumb:

One reason you and others are not seeing as many deer is due to the time of year it is. This time of year deer move into what is called a yarding area. They go to this area for food and shelter from the winter weather and most always use the same yard area year after year. In this area you will see large numbers of deer (buck & doe). They will normally remain in this area until Spring approaches. Then the herd will break apart and the does start their search for a place to give birth and will only do so when their sixth sense tell them that the weather conditions will be suitable for their fawn to survive.

So should we take the re-appearance of the deer as a sign of impending spring weather?

Deer in our area don't "yard", this is an occurence for animals that must survive brutal winters. I will venture a guess that they aren't seeing as many do to the EHD, or "Blue Tongue" outbreak this summer. I don't know how severe it was in NKY, but in EKY it killed in my estimate up to 30 percent of the herd.

So should we take the re-appearance of the deer as a sign of impending spring weather?

And here we thought is was a wood chuck, porcupine or something!
