Holmes dominated right out of the gate, Arrez shut his man down and had 5 blocks by half time. Ricardo had 2 nice dunks and scored when he wanted as did Arrez. Kind of a sloppy game, but I have seen Boone Co one other time in the Lloyd tour when they played Daviess Co and they did not show me much then. Not saying they are a bad team, they're record proves they are not. Tonite Holmes was way to much, again defense was just awesome. Don't know the big mans name for Boone, he had a nice game. Can't argue with that. Didn't think it would be by this much, but Holmes is the real deal. Congrats!

Highlands and Cov. Cath. took them to overtime. The Dawgs are certainly the favorites to come out of the 9th Region, but I doubt they will advance to Rupp without a nail-biter or two along the way.

Offense sells tickets, defense wins games. Boone came in to this game as the top team in nky in scoring and completely got shut down. Holmes dominated from start to finish and could have won by more if they wanted.

 

Henderson and R. Johnson scored at will and Krohman was shut down all night. Clark also had a nice game down low for Holmes. The kid has really improved over the years that I've seen him.

 

One bright spot for Boone was Earls. He played a nice offensive game but defensively Holmes did what they wanted down low.

My observations are:

 

Boone should have played a 2/3 zone most of the game instead of staying in a man to man the majority of the game. I think Johnson hit a couple of 3s, but everything else Holmes had was layups and dunks, and the outside shots were mostly missed.

 

Boone has little or no half court offensive plays or sets. No motion, cuts through the lane, weave, screens, picks, pick and roll or anything at all to get shooters open and get separation from athletic defenders. It was 5 players standing and trying to go one on one. The pressure was on the guards to try to penetrate and force something to happen. Boone was forced to take low percentage shots. All of Earls points were nice, one-on-one fadaway shots.

 

Holmes press did not hurt Boone.

 

Holmes had some nice blocks and has a nice team, but I think it could have been much closer if Boone had offensive plays.

 

I think Holmes will need to be able to score more points if they get out of the region. They can't depend on scoring 40 to 57 points every game and holding the other team to 40 to 45 points, especially against the best teams.

 

Boone's talent was not utilized to its potential.

 

Unless Boone changes what it runs offensively and defensively against Holmes the next time, the result will be the same.
