I can't agree with some of the previous post that maybe Boone's coach coached to lose. No Coach that I know has ever coached to lose a game they hate to lose no matter what! With that being said, if that was the case, don't you think Coach Henley would tank one just to get his team refocused before districts? I have talked to Coach Henley several time before games and he NEVER under estimates any opponet. If you listened to him you would think he was playing Cov. Cath. every night that just the way he prepares and in doing so his coaching staff also buys in to hard work on and off the floor and that produces W's.. The great thing this year is Holmes team has that great bluecollar mentality with out ego's and it does not matter who scores there is one common thread that binds this team together - everbody plays hard and defends or there 7-8 guys just waiting to take his place if he doesn't.

And your point? That's the SOPHOMORES. They're not playing against a team that has Arrez, Avery, Clark, Humphrey, Nelson, etc on it. What the SOPHOMORES do against Holmes SOPHOMORES has nothing to do with anything.

 

Bottom line is that Boone got taken to the wood shed tonight. Everyone can sit here and "cry" about Boone not doing this or that defensively but isn't that what everyone says after they lose to Holmes? "Should have played a zone." If teams aren't playing a zone against Holmes, it's for a reason. It's only going to work for so long before a drive, and collapse in the defense allow Holmes to do the same thing in a back door cut. Do you not think coaches know this? They're the head coaches for a reason, like it or not.

 

Also, if Boone is so good offensively, why couldn't they overcome good defense? You can say Boone didn't run "set plays", but don't good teams have set plays? Also, it seemed this way because Holmes was so good at fighting through the screens, which is attributed to good defense, which you would have saw if you were at the game. Boone has scored in the 70's practically every game...But yet they lose and all of a sudden it's the coaches fault, rather than saying they got beat by a far superior team.

 

I'm not a fan of any particular team in nky as I'm a graduate of Oak Hills in Ohio, but seriously it's getting old of how many excuses people use after they lose to Holmes. Maybe this team is that good and you should give them the credit that is due. It's not like Holmes played the entire game with their starting 5 either. Pittman, Nelson, Riley and Humphrey were on the court a lot together tonight with either R. Johnson or Henderson out there with them.

 

I agree 100% with you, good hard nose defense can take any good offensive team out of there sets. BOONE doesn't match up well wit HOLMES.There is just to much Talent and depth for HOLMES.There isnt a team in NORTHERN KENTUCKY that can match up man for man with the dogs, but on any given night a team from NORTHERN KENTUCKY can beat them.We could be looking at one of the greatest teams ever out of the 9th region.

This has been a common theme the last few years that both fans and parents have seen and complained about, even after victories this year. Boone's scoring has come mostly from blistering shooting and talent this year, not on set plays and game planning. You certainly can't blame coaching for everything, HOWEVER, the coach also has to take some responsibility. Boone's boys stopped playing and weren't trying later in the game. It's on the coach to motivate them to play to the end or get someone in there who will.

You are going out on a limb here, and I disagree with you.

There have been some teams out of the 9th Region this decade that would be better than this current group in my opinion. The Cov Cath team that made the Final Four would be one group.

So Coach Henley and his staff have not had an impact on this year's team?

I would think his staff has done a great job and their kids have bought in.

Were you at the game? Boone was setting picks, using ball screens, etc the whole game trying to free up shooters. I can remember several possessions where Krohman ran Arrez around the whole floor trying to get free for a shot but he kept sliding through screens. Holmes was just too good defensively which caused Boone to have a poor shooting night as everything was contested. Boone's boys quit playing and weren't trying later in the game? Any team who gets down 20 is going to try and play even harder to get back in the game. Nobody wants to get blown out and run off the floor. Don't get me wrong, there was obvious frustration amongst the Boone players, but to say they quit trying is just wrong. Also a coach can only motivate so much. Holmes team last year is a prime example. When tournament time came and they finally bought in to good defense, that is when you really saw just how good they could be.

Different coaching, possibly different result. I've seen the Boone sophs beat the Holmes sophs many times in AAU ball playing a 2/3 zone and running plays to get shooters open.

 

Guess what.........this isn't AAU and Euton, Jackson, etc. play elsewhere. Once again it's all about the Boone Sophs......guess what, Holmes, HHS, CovCath, etc have some sophs that are equal the measure too.

 

If I had to pick a team of class of '10, I'd start with Rico and go from there.

 

If you want to see the best challenge of the favorite getting out of the Region, stick with Highlands and CovCath.

 

If you want the best team to represent the ninth region in the "Sweet Sixteen", stick with the Bulldogs.

 

Let's call it what it is, Holmes is the best Team in the ninth region, period.

I disagree that you measure great teams by championships. IMO, you measure great programs by championships. If they cut down the nets at Rupp, they are the Sweet 16 champs and then you can start a thread about the greatest team from the 9th. That debate will depend alot on who the champ has to go through to win it all.

You discount the importance of simply playing a sport. There are people who remember who finished 2nd or 4th and its the kids that played on those teams.

5 games in the 50's this year. Closest game was the 9 point overtime victory over Covington Catholic. Next closest was a 19 point victory over Holy Cross. Two games in the 40's, a 6 point win over Trinity and the 5 point lose to Male.

 

It seems to me that making good teams work for their shots is going to keep the score low because you won't have an up and down the court game.

 

For tonight, outstanding defense prevailed over high-scoring defense.

 

Next Closest was the 9 point victory over Gallatin, not 19 over Holy Cross. Gallatin was tied with holmes with just minutes left in the game. Defense, Defense, Defense. You can play the same defensive game against them, but they are much quicker than other teams. I have Boone winning the 9th, so I thought it would be much closer than this.:scared:

While you cant teach heart, you can definetly teach toughness. See Bob Huggins. If a coach is hard on his players all the time, they are going to become tough.
