Different coaching, possibly different result. I've seen the Boone sophs beat the Holmes sophs many times in AAU ball playing a 2/3 zone and running plays to get shooters open.

Boone's coach believes that the players should be able to get themselves open:confused:... Not going to happen against the best defenders around!!! Gotta change something up for before the next go around!:irked:

As i predicted Holmes big at halftime.I know championship defense when I see it. If holmes get to RUPP watch out. Defense wins championship and even state titles, when you are playing as intense as the Bulldogs are.

Holmes plays the best "D" in the state.

Holmes plays the best "D" in the state.

I have to agree with you.:thumb::

Someone had a quote earlier this year, that when he played ball, to simulate Holmes defense. His coach had the offense play against 8-10 defensive players. How do you coach your team with that kind of defense?

There press reminds me of the old Arkansas press of the mid 90`s. 40 minutes of hell i think they called it.

My observations are:

Boone should have played a 2/3 zone most of the game instead of staying in a man to man the majority of the game. I think Johnson hit a couple of 3s, but everything else Holmes had was layups and dunks, and the outside shots were mostly missed.

Boone has little or no half court offensive plays or sets. No motion, cuts through the lane, weave, screens, picks, pick and roll or anything at all to get shooters open and get separation from athletic defenders. It was 5 players standing and trying to go one on one. The pressure was on the guards to try to penetrate and force something to happen. Boone was forced to take low percentage shots. All of Earls points were nice, one-on-one fadaway shots.

Holmes press did not hurt Boone.

Holmes had some nice blocks and has a nice team, but I think it could have been much closer if Boone had offensive plays.

I think Holmes will need to be able to score more points if they get out of the region. They can't depend on scoring 40 to 57 points every game and holding the other team to 40 to 45 points, especially against the best teams.

Boone's talent was not utilized to its potential.

Unless Boone changes what it runs offensively and defensively against Holmes the next time, the result will be the same.

Congratulations to Holmes, and good luck to both teams in the districts and region.

Great analysis of the game. Dead on. :thumb:

I kept thinking why on earth did Boone choose THIS offensive strategy??? With this being so obvious to everyone else it looked like their coach was committing suicide. Holmes is NO DOUBT the team to beat, but I still think that Boone has something in them if they went about it another way. Earls is a great player. He was the only option that worked. We know they have shooters, and taking nothing away from the Bulldog's 'D', their setup made it way to easy for Holmes to force them to rush their shots. Would it be a crazy thought that Boone's coach, knowing that the next time they play Holmes is when it counts most, made bad decisions on purpose to give the Bulldogs a false sense that Boone just ain't got it? I know that sounds wack, but who knows? I just have a hard time believing the coach thought that a 'No Plan' game was going to work. Well, if that's what he did, I guess I just blew his cover. Sorry coach.

I did like that the Bulldogs picked up where they left off from the other night with Highlands and kept their momentum going. They never really laid down with their lead and they committed themselves to play hard the entire game. They're building themselves some great endurance ethics and strongly positioning themselves to make some real noise com tourney time.

And your point? That's the SOPHOMORES. They're not playing against a team that has Arrez, Avery, Clark, Humphrey, Nelson, etc on it. What the SOPHOMORES do against Holmes SOPHOMORES has nothing to do with anything.

Bottom line is that Boone got taken to the wood shed tonight. Everyone can sit here and "cry" about Boone not doing this or that defensively but isn't that what everyone says after they lose to Holmes? "Should have played a zone." If teams aren't playing a zone against Holmes, it's for a reason. It's only going to work for so long before a drive, and collapse in the defense allow Holmes to do the same thing in a back door cut. Do you not think coaches know this? They're the head coaches for a reason, like it or not.

Also, if Boone is so good offensively, why couldn't they overcome good defense? You can say Boone didn't run "set plays", but don't good teams have set plays? Also, it seemed this way because Holmes was so good at fighting through the screens, which is attributed to good defense, which you would have saw if you were at the game. Boone has scored in the 70's practically every game...But yet they lose and all of a sudden it's the coaches fault, rather than saying they got beat by a far superior team.

I'm not a fan of any particular team in nky as I'm a graduate of Oak Hills in Ohio, but seriously it's getting old of how many excuses people use after they lose to Holmes. Maybe this team is that good and you should give them the credit that is due. It's not like Holmes played the entire game with their starting 5 either. Pittman, Nelson, Riley and Humphrey were on the court a lot together tonight with either R. Johnson or Henderson out there with them.

So how does Boone score all those points that they score or have scored this year?

I saw Boone running sets, I saw them flip the guards run some off of stagger screens, ball screens and what not. I think you are passing too much blame on the coaches.

In my opinion, they just didn't handle ball pressure well and Holmes did a good job of denying passing lanes. In a sense they sort of panicked at times and seemingly were just flipping the ball to the basket. They had guys who were just throwing up perimeter shots. Once again there was a lot of ball pressure and whenever they got any inside penetration they didn't execute passes.

They may have handled the press, but they certainly got sped up on offense and threw the ball away in the halfcourt.

If Boone would have played 2/3 zone most of the game, they would have been mangled on the boards.

1. Why take outside shots when you can drive and get a much easier shot? Even the Holmes players are smart enough to know this.

2. Boone was forced to take low percentage shots because Holmes defense were in their laps the whole game. Also, Boone has averaged over 70 points a game all year, so how come the one game they score 37 points, all of a sudden you try to critique their offense when just yesterday you were talking about how good and mighty their athleticism was and that they like to run and their offense is one of the best in the state. It didn't look like tonight they liked the uptempo style Holmes was playing.

3. Holmes press didn't hurt Boone? When you force a team to take longer and work harder to bring the ball up the floor it definetly takes a toll on them. There might not have been as many turnovers, but there was a reason Boone only scored 14 points in the first half.

4. Boone has scored 70 points a game all year but all of a sudden they don't have offensive plays? Last time I checked, this is what teams work on during practice. Maybe there offense wasn't good enough to overcome Holmes good defense...Hmm that's a possibility.

5. As I stated before, offense sells tickets, defense wins games. Look at the khsaa web site and see how many times Holmes has scored less than 60 points and rethink your statement. Holmes definetly is a team with offensive firepower. 57 points was still enough to beat your Rebels by 20. :sssh:

6. Boone's underclassman have been talked about how good they are all year but all of a sudden their talent is being underutilized?

Lastly, Holmes proved tonight Boone won't be a factor to them come tourney time. If I'm Holmes, the only ones I'm worried about are Higlands and Covcath.

Has the thought that a very good defense can take you out of what you want to do, because they simply may be a better team?

Earls is not a great player...he is a nice player for a sophomore but has a ways to go, but is fairly skilled for his age and size. Their best player is McFarland in my opinion.

I didn't think Holmes played four complete quarters, but when they are on a roll they are fun to watch.

It is silly to think that Boone's coach would purposely throw the game.

5 games in the 50's this year. Closest game was the 9 point overtime victory over Covington Catholic. Next closest was a 19 point victory over Holy Cross. Two games in the 40's, a 6 point win over Trinity and the 5 point lose to Male.

It seems to me that making good teams work for their shots is going to keep the score low because you won't have an up and down the court game.

For tonight, outstanding defense prevailed over high-scoring defense.

Here is a question for Holmes fans. It seems to me that last year occasionally you would hear about a kid named Slusher that was pretty young in the Holmes system but apparently showed some talent. Haven't heard anything from him this season. Do I have the right name and if so has he made any noise?
