Nice job by the Breds tonight..

Game one pits the 12-5 Beechwood Tigers against the 12-5 Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds in the first semi-final game at Dayton High School. Beechwood started the first quarter with a 6-0 run that lasted the first 3:20 on back to back three pointers by Alex Hall and Trey Beuttel. Newport Central Catholic could not get it into the lane. Each pass inside was intercepted. Beechwood finished strong with a 14-7 lead going into the second quarter.

 

NCC came back on a 11-1 run starting the second quarter and took the lead on a Michael Lipscomb three pointer at the 2:30 mark in the second. Beechwood stopped the run at 15 with a basket by Nick Hall at the 4:03 mark in the quarter. NCC built the lead to 7 during the quarter and headed into the locker room with a 5 point lead, 27-22

 

Kyle Biggs from Newport Central Catholic won the ClassX Free Throw Challenge at halftime over Beechwood’s Cody Elliott. Kyle made 6 free throws.

 

Third quarter started with NCC the ball. Ncc’s Grant Pangallo hit a brick wall in Kevin Barry setting a screen. Pangallo hit the deck hard, but resumed play. Beechwood tied the game back up at the 3:10 mark with an Alex Hall three pointer, but NCC came back and ended the half up 7, 40-33.

 

Fourth quarter saw Alex Hall pull the Tigers within 2 after draining two three pointers. NCC went to a stall game with 90 seconds to go in the half, up 2. With 30.3 to go, Alex Beuttel got a steal and was fouled going to the basket. Beuttel missed both free throws. Beechwood fouled Grant Pangallo with 15.3 to go. Pangallo made both free throws giving NCC a 4 point lead. With 7.2 seconds to go, Nathan Snyder fouled out putting Dustin Geisler at the line. He sank both shots giving NCC the eventual 6 point win, 50-44.

Nice win and congrats to the breds. I didnt see the game, I am sure they deserved it. Game in and game out i continue to be impressd with Beechwood's play, and if they could have made their free throws, they might have been able to pull a win out here. Either way congrats to New Cath and good luck in the finals.

Face it the Tigers are a nice NKAC D-3 team this year, much better than in years past--Nothing more, nothing less!!

...on any given night...when the planets are aligned correctly! Nice win for the Breds! BW...valiant effort...work on free throws!

I think they better stick to Class A. NCC may have a shot on any given night of knocking off a Top 5 team but their lack of depth really hurts them. Beechwood is a fine Class A school and I would leave it at that.

Lack of depth, or failure to develop/use their bench? NewCath is notorious for playing 5-7 people at all levels.

Neither one can come close to beating Holmes.

Both Beechwood and New Cath played a very nice game. Both teams took one another out of their game plans, and the difference was at the FREE THROW line. If you were not their you missed a great game were both teams gave it their all. That type of game is what the ALL A tourney is about!
