Is Elliott the best 16th Region team ever?

Featured Replies

I think this question will answer itself over the next 1 1/2 seasons.

At this point in time the 61 Tomcats are the best.

Elliott County has the "best" team in the Region this year IMO and that is worthy of a big :thumb:

As far as best ever? They'll have to win a State Championship before we even start speaking in those terms.

I agree with other posters that several past teams from different schools might give Elliott fits, but on the other hand they aren't playing this year:sssh:

Good luck to all 16th Region Teams:thumb:

I'm not too familiar with 16th region history, but I would think it would take a heck of a team to defeat the '61 Ashland team that Larry Conley starred on. I believe that team had 6 or 7 players that played D-1 basketball. They had a state championship and was runner-up once. Of course, it is difficult to compare teams of today with teams from nearly 50 years ago.

Are you saying the 60-61' team is the best ever in the state or in the region? I'm talking about Elliott being the best 16th region team ever, not the best team in state history.

I would have to say if a team is considered the best ever in the state then they would have to be the best ever team in their Region. Elliott County is a very good team. Even if the 16th Region was a strong Region they would still be the team to beat this year. I will have to vote for the '61 Tomcats as being the best ever in the 16th.

61 Ashland Tomcats. If I'm not mistaken the top 6 players from that team all received Division 1 scholarships.

:thumb:I was going to post this team and just could not remember the year. Also, Russell had a very good team that included R. Hensly, J. Savage and some others - all were very good (I can't remember the year on that team either, early 70's maybe?).

The Rose Hill team with Mayo, Dawson that others have mentioned certainly deserves mention as does a couple of the power house Boyd teams of the "Zornes era".

There have been some good ones and who knows, depending on their regional run this season and their results next season as well this group of Elliot kids just may be in that group that is mentioned as "best ever". I like the idea being a fan of a small class A school myself. This Elliot team is a special group of kids for sure. Speaking from a fan of small schools I hope that they make another run :thumb:.(if my favorite cannot of couse ;))

Right now I will stick with the 61' Ashland Tomcats and I don't know if there wll ever be a 16th region team as good as they were.

I'm really sticking my neck out here to respond at all.

First let me say that I have nothing but admiration and respect for the boys at Elliott County, and they have already achieved something that they will be able to enjoy the rest of their lives. It may sound corny, but I genuinely love these kids. They are fierce competitors, and lay it all out on the floor. They are gentlemen off the floor. I wish them nothing but the best... with the possible exception of when they face one certain 16th Region team.

Elliott fans have every reason to be proud of their boys, and should do everything they can to support them. Even so, I don't have to go back to the dark ages to find teams that would present them serious match up issues.

The Morgan County team featuring 6' 6" AA Admir Algic and the West Liberty boys would give them fits. I'm not going to say Elliott couldn't beat them, but Morgan County could also win on any given night.

Last season's Russell squad with a healthy Jon VanHoose was a headache for Elliott... not invincible, but definitely a headache.

The 2002-2003 Rose Hill team would have given Elliott fits featuring 6' 4" All-Stater O.J. Mayo, 6' 5" 2nd team All-Stater Marques Dawson (who set a new state record with 16 steals in a game,) 6' 4" Mark King (who once scored 20 points in one quarter,) muscular 6' 3" banger Josh Magnuson, 6' 5" power dunker and rebounding machine Bill Walker, with eventual Huntington High standouts Michael Taylor and Jamaal Williams, future Russell stars Jonathan VanHoose and Austin Blair, Fairview playmaker Alex Barker, Greenup sharp-shooter Zach Gillum, Raceland scorer Jamison Sparks, Marcus and Matt Thomas and others.

As far as Regional dominance, the Ashland Tomcats in the four seasons between 1975 and 1979 under Paul Patterson did not lose one game to a Regional opponent, and went to Freedom Hall (pre-Rupp) four straight years. A feat that is unlikely to be repeated again.

Bottom line, enjoy the ride to the fullest. You never know when it might end, or how long it may be before it happens again... if ever. :thumb:

Another good post here......:thumb:

No way.

But they could be considered one of the best in there district.

Come on Onetoya... I'm not living in the past... it's just when I hear, "the best EVER" I assume that means "ever" which begs comparison to teams not playing this year...

I thought I was giving Elliott an obvious plug to keep it in focus? Those teams are not here to beat Elliot THIS year. I hope a 64th team will go to the Sweet 16 but our chances look remote right now. Maybe if posting wrong.

Is Elliott the best team ever in the 16th.......That's out to debate;)

Rose Hill was very good in 03.

Were they? The NKY teams really enjoyed playing them.

No! 61 Ashland Tomcats, and don't think even many Elliott fans will dispute this. Lets wait and see what happens the next couple of years before this should even be discussed.

Hold on. This kids still got 45-50 games yet to play. Lot of variables and what ifs in that amount of games. Team that I have come to falll in love with, root for, and watch (despite living 120 miles away). I don't think you can compare them to the past, because they have to much future left to talk about their past in comparison.

But it sure is great to see a county that ranks 115th of 120 counties in population and with the largest town of 690 doing so great and getting so much hype and discussion. They are making the folks at Hee Haw proud (not a downgrade but if they still ran the show the guy would probably stand up in the cornfield and say Sandy Hook KY Population 690 SALUTE!!) If your not 50 yrs. old you may have no idea what I'm talking about!!!

I'm only 41, but I know what you're talking about. :p

My bad Sir, I misunderstood.

That is good advice.

I would've loved to see this Elliott County team compete in the 16th Region in the 1990's when you had Boyd County (Roger Zornes), Ashland (Wayne Breeden) and Greenup County (Randy Ward) consistently holding the top tier teams in the Region and even garnering state ranking in this decade. In 2000 the Pre-Season top 25 poll in the Lex. Herald had all three ranked in the Top 20, we may never see that again in the 16th. It's nice to have a dominant team like Elliott, but I miss those days when these three programs along with East Carter (Charlie Baker), West Carter (Grady Lowe), Sam Sparks (Russell), and others made for a very competitive region.
