As for a message that his may send, I fully admit that I don't know the situation I am not a Russell fan and certainly not close to the situation as some claim to be but jmo it would send a message something like "hey, we can quit anytime and will be let back on". As for the blame I really don't know, I just believe that kids should not quit. When a kid becomes an adult later in life and lets say are in job and someone in supervision does things that they feel is unfair or maybe they don't agree with. What is their answer going to be then.....Quit? They could and get another job certainly but I can promise that the same thing will happen over and over again. I personally have been in jobs that I was in a supervisor's postion and as a non supervisory employee (supervisors (coaches) are still employees by the way and have to answer to someone). I have never seen a completely conflict free enviroment in any job anywhere.

IMO this is just maybe one of the first lessons on life for a young man that they are not always going to think that things are fair or that they disagree with something. Guess what, that's life guys -- get used to it bc it is not going to change when you are older either . :thumb:

I am not slamming any one kid or parent with this at all, I was just stating some of my opinions in general on matters like this regrdless of where it happens.

I take exception to these remarks. Let's examine what the Devils have done in the 5 1/2 years under Coach Dodd. This includes winning the region for the first time since 1972 and they were certainly the favorite to repeat last year, until Vanhoose went down with a knee injury.

 

2003 15-15 lost to Ashland in the region semi-final on a last second

shot. 43-41

 

2004 17-11 lost to Morgan Co in the region semi-final. 49-44

 

2005 18-13 lost to Rowan Co in the region final. 53-45

 

2006 18-14 Won the 16th Region final defeating Elliott Co. 56-52

 

2007 27-5 Lost to Elliott Co in the region semi-final 51-35 (Without

Vanhoose)

 

2008 2-14 After losing 10 of the their top 12 players from last year,

 

including the two projected starters who moved this summer, everyone knew it would take 2-3 years to rebuild.

 

I certainly hate to lose any players, especially Jacob and Mike because I've known them longer and they were a part of the winning teams. I wish them the best. I will still be there pulling for the younger Devils.

 

Russell basketball is in good hands. It will just take time to rebuild with the younger kids who will now be forced to gain even more experience.:fire:

Very good post and you have made some very good points (coming from someone that would know this situation as well or better than just about anyone on here anyway).

I don't think that anyone/team can lose the amount of talent/production off of a team like Russell did off of last years Senior dominated team and expect to come right back with the same results. Russell basketball is as all of their sports are in very good hands.

If Coaching was a popularity contest, than none of us would ever get into it.

 

Players will more times that naught, learn the difference between like and respect but often, parents never do. I admire those who put in endless hours of preparation, practice, game prep and always hear, the negative from others.

 

Show me a Coach who isn't confident in him/herself and I'll show you, a person who won't last in the profession.

I talk to the Russell coaches on a daily basis and it is my opinion that I know all of them much better than you.

 

I could not hand pick a better group of coaches for my own son to be around, on and off the court.:thumb:

IMO Russell has too many athletes walking the halls to be 2-14. Someone needs to get these kids on the floor, and we aren't having this discussion.

I have this thing about younger players, I believe that the older players should get the playing time and the younger players get the sub minutes. If a senior played last year and a younger player takes his time this year it is not fair. The younger player has another year to play . The senior or juniors have given their time and should be respected for that. Now mind you the older players can and did play the sport well. They have paid their dues, so to speak.

 

Do you feel that way even if the younger player has more talent and is a better player? Nowadays a coach's livelyhood comes down to wins and loses. I think when players get to the varsity level the playing time should be earned in various ways but I think it mostly boils down to talent. Who are the 5 best players that I can put on the floor that gives my team the best chance to win regardless of class or anything else. It's also good for the future of the program if you have young talent. JMO!

When this happens and a younger player gets a lot more playing time I for one would quit the team. I think there are some that should and are going to quit.

 

Wow! So let's say for instance that you had a very talented freshman or sophomore that was going to be the cornerstone for your program for years to come and he was ready to play at this point, you would start a less talented and less skilled player based solely on age and class? I'm not trying to be argumentative, I'm just trying to figure this out because it boggles me. Nowadays players are bigger, stronger, faster, more skilled, and more talented at a younger age.

Part of being a good coach is having a personality, an any one who has talked to him knows he comes across as very arrogrant, that is one of the reasons parents as well as players and other coaches don't have alot of respect for Dodd

 

I don't think that your personality has much to do with whether you can coach or not. There are tons of great coaches with little or no personality in every level. Not saying that Dodd doesn't have personality because I know him and I know he does but I'm just making a point. Personality is a plus but I don't think a neccessity.

Duck since your so close to the staff at Russell, How did Parsley feel at Fairview with Dodd coaching from the stands in the JV game?

I agree with last quote but usually the sole reason ofr firings in HS sports is not winning or losing.

I would say Coach Goldsmith resigned on his own. He would not have been fired.
