Can't help but disagree with the bolded parts.

 

1) Tubby was so loyal to his assistants that he didn't take any of them to Minnesota. That being the case, he obviously didn't feel they were capable, and should have replaced them at UK.

 

2) Best tournament coach? Seriously? He went into the NCAA tourney several times at the #1 seed and couldn't get to a final four. He's a very good in game coach, no doubt, but its hard to say he was a good tournament coach.

 

1) Taking assistant with you to another school and honoring a current contract are two totally different things. Uk wanted Tubby to get rid of his assistants and he refused, that shows his loyalty. Tubby was very loyal to his assistant at UK. Not taking them to Minnesota is ilrelavent. You cannot argue about Tubby's integrity while he was at UK. He did things with class and he did things the right way.

 

2) Are you forgeting about what he did in '98? That may just be the best coached tourney that I've ever witnessed. Just because he didn't reach the Final Four with the couple #1 seeds we had doesn't mean he isn't a great tourney coach either. To me, those #1 seeds were because of Tubby's coaching during the season and SEC tourney and not because of the great talent UK had. It comes back to my dismay with Tubby, he's an excellant coach but poor recruiter. He always over achieved with the talent he had, IMO because he was such a good coach. Then when it came tourney time, the lack of talent caught up with us. Don't forget all the SEC tourney titles won while at UK, don't think that Tubby's coaching wasn't a big reason for that.

 

In this day in age, it's really difficult to say just who is the very best tourney coach in college bball but I know Tubby's name should be on the list.

1. Tubby was loyal to his assistants. However just because he didn't take them with him to Minnesota doesn't mean he was not loyal. I mean when he went to Minnesota, he needed to surrond himself with some guys who know that area more and are use to recruiting in that area. The guys he had definitely were not those guys...

 

 

 

 

And Jirsa(?) and Saul Smith ARE those guys who know the area and recruit that area historicaly? I can't agree with you on this point. IF Tubby would have brought Saul in here as an assistant it would have gotten super ugly.

 

BUT.....

 

The guys he had here, for the most part, were NOT recruiters at all. They were lazy with it and it drug Tubby down, too, but he was loyal to them until he left. I think the old assistants took the Adolph Rupp approach and thought they could let the KENTUCKY name recruit for them. I would have cut them loose, too, when I took another position. Just MHO.

I really don't have much of a problem with Tubby, just the people that think he can do no wrong.

 

When you're making $2,000,000 a year, sometimes you have to make tough decisions. Including firing underperforming employees, even if you like them.
