Doyel: Caracter Issues at UL...

Featured Replies

Doyel is a clown but he always has an interesting column to read.

Caracter has had plenty of problems and to be honest, I've never been that impressed with him. Granted I've only watched him play a few times, but he has never been overly impressive, especially for someone that started gaining national recognition in the 8th grade.

Pitino called Doyel last night about the article...

"The reason we've taken so much effort trying to change him," Pitino said, "is we love his mom and we felt he was very worth the change -- not so much as a basketball player, but if he didn't change he has no chance of making it in life, never mind basketball."

OMG!!!

Was it a long conversation?

Hasn't Doyel had his sights trained on DC since his high school days?

From what Gregg told me, they talked for a little while and in the end agreed to disagree. Shocker...

It's all part of an interview on my college hoops podcast that I'll have up tonight or tomorrow...

Maybe there's more to the story than we know. I can't find it in myself to find fault with a person who is trying to help a parent with a difficult child. Pitino has made it clear he doesn't expect DC to be a long-term player at UL. I know many despse Pitino, but isn't it possible he's really trying to help a wayward young man who's certain to jump to the NBA be better prepared to achieve success at that level if he has some sense of responsibility?

Uhh, come on Rockmom. I'm sure Pitino does truly care for his players, but if you think his #1 interest is molding young men as opposed to winning basketball games then you're badly mistaken.

So would approve of allowing Caracter to play in the spring semester and not go to class at all?

You'll never convince me that it's good to continue to allow a kid to play, regardless of your fondness of his family, when he makes mistake after mistake. Sitting him for a few games and losing some non-conference games will teach him more than nothing, which is what he's done....

Ask someone like Billy Donovan that question. I think they go hand in hand. Change their habits and work ethic, make them better, and, in turn, they make the team better.
