Honestly, if Les does leave, it is still going to be tough to beat what Petrino did. Les has come out and publically stated he is not taking the UM job (which we have seen this before), but Petrino left behind notes of his departure and bailed before the season ended. We know it is the nature of the game for these coaches to jump ship, but Petrino did it in a way we have not seen.

 

I agree, it would be hard to top Petrino.

I'm a CPA. If I were to quit my job in the middle of tax season, I would be considered a snake by all CPA firms. Same goes for a coach who quits before the season is over.

Not necessarily. But when you stop 3/4 of the way through a season to accept another position without even notifying your team or ownership until the plane is sitting on the runway, that is not entirely fair (or ehtical). Especially when there are millions of dollars at stake.

What about signed and LEGAL documents? Are contracts no longer binding to anyone? I'll bet that there are some soldiers and marines out there who wish they could just leave a note and take another job right now, but they can't. They signed a contract and have to abide by it. I can see it now. Pvt. Snuffy goes out to replace Pvt. Jody on guard duty in downtown Baghdad and all there is is a note saying:

 

"Tell the C.O. it's been a tough ride, but I have a new employment option with a more preferable atmosphere. Good Luck with all your future endeavors, Pvt. Jody"

Bobby phoned in his resignation one day after telling the owner that he was "his coach". He did not even have the stones to face his players and tell them he was quitting.

 

And......when was the last time anyone ever heard of a 11:30pm press conference to announce a hiring at a major university. Could it not wait untill the next day so he could at least talk to the Atlanta folks and let them know what was going on?

Coaches sign contracts knowing they HAVE to win to keep a job.

They usually get canned for performance, but also get a tidy little payoff for the rest of the uncoached time. I know that leaving jobs is part of coaching, but what will Atlanta get from Petrino for leaving 3 games and some odd years befor his contract ended?
