December 13, 200718 yr http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/12/12/bush.schip/index.html Story Highlights - President Bush: Measure is "essentially identical" to the proposal he vetoed before - Bill would have expanded the State Children's Health Insurance Program - Bush: Measure "moves our country's health care system in the wrong direction" - Program covers 6 million children whose parents don't qualify for Medicaid
December 13, 200718 yr Does this program cost too much?? I mean if that's the case, isn't a trillion dollars a little steep for our altercation w/ Iraq. We waste sooo much money so how can you go wrong in giving health care to children.
December 13, 200718 yr Didn't you know! Giving health care to kids is the first step toward universal socialized medicine! The that's followed by outright communism! Only Commies want healthcare for kids. :sarcasm:
December 13, 200718 yr He's headed for a veto override in the house since an election year is coming. They need to compromise: 1) Allow the tax increase (Bush) 2) Take out the adults (Dems) 3) Increase the amount (Bush) 4) Cover all the lowest children first before moving up to higher income levels (Dems) I hate politics.

It is a tough business but it worked well for the founding fathers (compromise and diplomacy) and it could work well again.

December 13, 200718 yr We go wrong when we begin to rely on the federal government for health care. I agree, and I really can't see where others can make a valid argument to defend it. Did we not all learn in middle school that socialism doesn't work?
December 13, 200718 yr We go wrong when we begin to rely on the federal government for health care. The bill was about providing free health care to children. Can anyone truly say that they are against free health care for children who have none.
December 13, 200718 yr Here's the problem with social medicine. The more involved the government gets in funding, the less they will be willing to pay for procedures. As funding decreases, the revenue to doctors, hospital equipment, research and pharmaceutical companies will decrease. As the revenue decreases, you'll see a drop in the number of people studying medicine and looking for new medical solutions. In the end, you end up with a mediocre medical system with shortages and limited access.
December 13, 200718 yr I agree, and I really can't see where others can make a valid argument to defend it. Did we not all learn in middle school that socialism doesn't work? Yes. The program is veiled with a canopy of helping children but in reality it is the first step toward Universal Health Care. It won't work.

While I'll admit that the United States would be a big country to socialize, why is it that countries with socialized medicine always rank ahead of the United States on health care? Is it because health care doesn't exist in the United States for many? If it doesn't exist, shouldn't something be done to make it exist?

It really depends on where you get your rankings and how they are compiled. I think our health care system is the best in the world. Ask yourself this, where would you want to go for a major or minor surgery? Here or somewhere in another country. I know what my answer would be.
