The Golden Compass- Evil?

Some seem to believe so.

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Christian groups are up in arms here over a new children's film starring Nicole Kidman and based on an award-winning novel by British author Philip Pullman, accusing it of being anti-religious.

The books by confirmed agnostic Pullman trace the fate of a young girl, Lyra, as she becomes drawn into an apocalyptic battle of good against evil, meeting a host of strange characters along the way including a polar bear, voiced in the film by Ian McKellan.

Evil in Pullman's books is represented by the church, called the Magisterium, whose acolytes kidnap orphans across England to subject them to horrible experiments in the frozen northern wastelands

I think people are just looking for something to cry about. We have movies that go both ways(for and against) religion, and both sides cry. I say who cares, it's just a movie.

I actually think there may be some validity to this. I personally could care less, but I've heard way more about this than Harry Potter.

Amen! I would like the see the people who put all this time, money, and effort into boycotting a movie, into perhaps Feeding the homless, helping orphaned children. You know making the world a better place! Here I go again with my idealist rant.:rolleyes:

Well, Pullman did write it as a direct contradiction to the Christianity-themed Chronicles of Narnia.

It is very anti-religion. The Archbishop of Canterbury did support it or something like that, something about it's about Church's abusing their power, not religion in general but I don't agree with that.

But either way it shouldn't be censored, but as thegooch said, I surely won't go support this (IMO) garbage.

Yes Ladies and Gentlemen, its as easy as that. It required no picket lines and thousand dollar ad campaigns.

I'm not going to watch it because it does not look like a good movie to me. Never been a fan of Nicole Kidman.

My fiance's father is a Sr.Minister, her mother a Youth Director, and I a Youth Minister In Training. She is absolutley uberly excited for this movie.

I guess it's still good to support what you believe in, I'll not take that away from anyone. Unless it's something that can hurt or kill someone, that's just too far. Is that a contradiction? I know people try to catch others up in contradictions in this forum.

I'm new to this forum really, so don't blast me too hard.

I know two Catholic School religion teachers, that are very conservative, that have read the entire series of books. Neither of them feels that there is any threat posed by this movie.

I agree that it has every right to be out and available to the public...I do know that my children will never see such garbage, not on my watch....it has a horrible message behind it, and one that my family won't walk softly to.

Harry Potter was never meant to be an attack on Christianity. This series is, especially against the Catholic Church.

I do believ in a higher power but I also know when to take things into consideratin and for what they're worth.

I want to see this movie first before I make a judgement about it. I know the guy that is the author of the book this movie was based on is an Atheist but that doesn't mean anything to me. If someone is truely strong enough in their beliefs, then they will not be swayed.

Remember all the fuss about The Davinci Code - even this (GC) is a kid's movie; is the uproar similar? Is it coming from the same sources?

This is the first I've heard of The Golden Compass; so I really don't know.
